In recent years, several prominent Catholic sites in France, including the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, have sustained significant fire damage. On July 11, a fire also broke out at the spire of Rouen Cathedral, which firefighters quickly managed to contain.

The next day, the Observatoire du Patrimoine Religieux, an organization dedicated to preserving France’s religious heritage, informed AFP that 27 churches had been destroyed by fire in 2023, and 12 in the first half of 2024. These incidents contribute to about 90% of the roughly 1,000 anti-Christian acts recorded each year by the French Ministry of Interior.
