Archbishop Fulton Sheen of New York, the greatest Catholic broadcaster in history, appeared on a secular television network, NBC, during prime-time back when there were just three major networks, no cable networks, and no internet. His show was a success nearly unimaginable in our time, eventually reaching an estimated 30 million viewers each week, which — beyond mega-Christian networks such as CBN, beyond TBN — would make it the most widely-viewed religious series in the history of television. (For a comparison: Fox News and MSNBC in prime time each reach around 2.2 to three million — a tenth of the archbishop’s audience, which was registered at a time when the population of the U.S. was less than half what it is today.) The current top-rated shows get about ten million viewers, and Thursday night football nearly twenty — still far below Sheen.
