{"id":11426,"date":"2017-11-02T22:24:32","date_gmt":"2017-11-02T22:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/?p=11426"},"modified":"2017-11-04T10:29:47","modified_gmt":"2017-11-04T10:29:47","slug":"heed-not-the-bell-on-wall-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/heed-not-the-bell-on-wall-street\/","title":{"rendered":"Heed Not The Bells On Wall Street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7508\" src=\"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/logoinside.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"45\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/5PRxxcWUGVc\/maxresdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for Father Jeremy Davies\" width=\"257\" height=\"145\" \/>Father Jeremy Davies, at one time London&#8217;s only exorcist, recently told\u00a0<em>Catholic World Report:<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cAll of society is subject to a demonic deception, in so far as it accepts an unbelieving point of view.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>He\u00a0went on,\u00a0as the publication reported, to &#8220;say something more unexpected \u2014 that those who seek a self-centered happiness &#8216;belong to Satan.&#8217; [Let those words sink in.]<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;He explained<\/span> that the traditional threefold temptation of the world, the flesh, and the devil is still relevant today. These elements combine in a spiritual battle for each soul, attempting to draw it away from Christ and, if they are not combated, will ultimately lead the soul to reject God.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>If the exorcist deals with an extreme example of this in possession, then Christians are obliged to examine their consciences for the first signs of minor, but no less insidious, &#8216;turning aways&#8217; that later have dire consequences.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>These are serious words and not the usual way we think of &#8220;worldliness&#8221; &#8212; which sometimes seems like a minor diversion (it is not). We are worldly when we still think those who collect money as superior, as more admirable than others &#8212; than the pious. We are worldly when we care about how much a neighbor has in comparison to ourselves. We are worldly when we are obsessed with cars and homes, with clothes, with our status in society.\u00a0We are worldly when our focus is secular news, when politics trumps spirituality. We are worldly when we follow celebrities down their dark paths.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>They are words, from the prominent priest, that come at a time of dramatic materialism and exploitation in the West: from Toronto to Miami, everything has turned to fool&#8217;s gold.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>It&#8217;s not just Father Davies.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saintaloysiuschurch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/msgr_charles_pope.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for Monsignor Charles Pope\" width=\"283\" height=\"189\" \/>In Washington, D.C., Monsignor Charles Pope has rung the same alarm, noting, also recently, in a list called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.adw.org\/2017\/10\/four-common-tactics-devil\/\">&#8220;the tactics of the devil,&#8221;<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that &#8220;Our path is toward Heaven, along the path of faith, obedience to the truth, love of God, and love of neighbor. The devil does all that he can to turn us away from our one true goal.\u00a0The devil tries to make us too absorbed in the passing things of the world.\u00a0Many claim that they are\u00a0too busy to pray, go to Mass, or seek other forms of spiritual nourishment. They become absorbed in passing, worldly things and ignore the lasting reality\u00a0that looms.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Worldliness is not just a fault; it tends to a grave sin. When we think we can have it both ways &#8212; that we can enjoy the luxury worldliness offers, while at the same time being &#8220;devout&#8221; (and from time to time we&#8217;ve all done this) &#8212; we&#8217;re actually what Jesus called &#8220;lukewarm.&#8221; Call it also the tipping point at which evil enters.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8220;Mine is not a kingdom of this world,&#8221; said Jesus (<em>John<\/em> 18:36). &#8220;All who are on the side of truth listen to My Voice&#8221; &#8212; not the gongs of the stock market. <em>&#8220;Children,&#8221;<\/em> said Jesus in Itaparinga, Brazil, <em>&#8220;he who truly loves Me and My most Blessed Mother does not love the world any longer, because the world for these persons is no longer of major importance.&#8221;<\/em> Instead we love The Word.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>That Voice spoke also of the &#8220;narrow gate.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Yet, how many are blinded due to the scales the world puts over our eyes?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Only with Christ do we see. (&#8220;They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak about the marvels of God,&#8221; <em>Acts<\/em> 2:4; 11).\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And as far as &#8220;lukewarm&#8221;<\/span> (see <em>Revelation<\/em> 3:15-16), Jesus said: <em>&#8220;I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot.\u00a0\u2018So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>As a commentator on those who are lukewarm observes, &#8220;They compromise with the world because it\u2019s the most popular choice.\u00a0They care more of what others think rather than the Lord.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Pope Francis added during his daily morning Mass &#8212; again, recently &#8212; that there are those in the world who have too much wealth and that their hoarding of money and land in the face of hungry children with no access to medicine or education is the equivalent of making \u201chuman sacrifices.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>It is, he said, an \u201cidolatry that kills.\u201d If we commit that, it is not a mere diversion; it is something\u00a0that could cause us to brush the phlegethons of sheol.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>We are either &#8220;fools for Christ&#8221; or &#8220;fools for the world.&#8221; If we&#8217;re with Christ, the world considers us\u00a0 fools; if we are of the world, we&#8217;re fools, in the eyes of Heaven, for what is passing.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Which are we &#8212; <em>o<\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>f<\/em> the Lord or <em>of<\/em> the world (and the prince of this world, who Jesus said, and as the exorcist warned, is the devil)?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;
