{"id":12775,"date":"2017-12-29T22:56:23","date_gmt":"2017-12-29T22:56:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/?p=12775"},"modified":"2020-07-31T13:51:36","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T13:51:36","slug":"the-surprise-of-black-madonnas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/the-surprise-of-black-madonnas\/","title":{"rendered":"Archives: The Surprise Of &#8216;Black Madonnas&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12594\" src=\"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/logoinside.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"45\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/originals\/71\/10\/0e\/71100e6167825bc94779be99797b9f36.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for black madonna albi france\" width=\"153\" height=\"204\" \/>We all know about &#8220;black Madonnas.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Or do we?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The mind swerves to spots such as Czestochowa in Poland, where an image thought to have been painted (on a tabletop) by Luke the Apostle has drawn millions of pilgrims, many reporting cures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/1\/17\/Monestir_de_Montserrat_vista_Roca_de_St._Jaume.jpg\/220px-Monestir_de_Montserrat_vista_Roca_de_St._Jaume.jpg\" width=\"191\" height=\"143\" \/>And we may think we know of another couple of black Madonnas, such as the one in the high reaches of a mountain outside of Barcelona called\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spiritdaily.net\/montserrat.htm\">Montserrat<\/a><\/span>. (What a perch and what a feeling!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But no:<\/span> you probably don&#8217;t know all about such dark images of Mary &#8212; and don&#8217;t realize, for example, that there are at least <em>150<\/em> such statues in France and <em>five hundred<\/em> across Europe. The wonders of Mary always go beyond comphrension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In France, near the Aude River, is a church called Notre Dame de Marceille near Limoux. Inside is a wood carving of Mary on a chair, holding Jesus on her lap. She was discovered in medieval times by a farmer who was plowing his field when suddenly his oxen refused to move. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was as the farmer, pondering the odd circumstance, looked at the earth in front of his stalled animals that he spotted a statue protruding from the dirt.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was a dark image of the Virgin and he took it home &#8212; where, overnight, it vanished. (<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He later found it right back where he&#8217;d originally discovered it, and decided, when he kept taking her away, and she kept vanishing, returning to the original spot, to build a church there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/originals\/56\/13\/77\/56137761c72841cf741a11ed652361c5.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for madonna of marseille\" width=\"202\" height=\"303\" \/><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Just fifty miles away,<\/span> on the right bank of the Tarn River, near Albi, France, is the &#8220;Black Madonna of La Dreche.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This time a dark statue of her &#8212; or at least a vision of what looked like a dark image &#8212; was spotted in the branches of a\u00a0<em>tree<\/em>, along with the apparition of a robed monk-like figure kneeling in prayer in front of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/img.geocaching.com\/cache\/large\/42b6d48f-7d44-4665-86b6-9750deff5ebf.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for black madonnas\" width=\"179\" height=\"247\" \/>Others came, others saw the same vision, and others watched time after time as the vision faded, although eventually\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">it remained in the form of an actual wooden statue and a shrine was built at this site also. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many were cured. Many were converted. Everyone was touched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fairy tales?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In fact, notes an author, &#8220;Black Madonnas can be found just about everywhere, from Russia to the Americas, making the image not an anomaly but an archetype.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They are defined, of course, as paintings or statues depicting Mary as swarthy of skin, often holding the Child, sometimes sitting on a throne.\u00a0Most are dated in the Middle Ages. And many &#8212; again, most &#8212; are claimed to have miraculous powers.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Is she dark, the Virgin,<\/span> because of the smoke from fires that plagued churches or candles or aging paint &#8212; the traditional Church explanation?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/originals\/fe\/70\/7c\/fe707c1fc5c356333d4ef76f312d6f5a.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for black madonnas\" width=\"161\" height=\"215\" \/>Artwork does turn dark from candle soot and\/or paint pigments that have deteriorated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But there&#8217;s a different quality about many dark images of Mary. She seems\u00a0<em>meant<\/em> to be darkly textured,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">simply Heaven presenting her the way a woman in Palestine 2,000 years ago may have appeared (with Caucasian features but dark, or, as at Guadalupe, olive-like skin).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For while the soot from candles is often a viable explanation, it does not always reconcile why, in certain cases, only the skin has turned dark (not the attire) nor why the woman&#8217;s skin, on rarer occasions, is dark but not the Infant&#8217;s (or at least, not\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"color: #000000;\">as<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> dark).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/736x\/aa\/36\/24\/aa3624faee41176ba01949bfb86b6756--religious-icons-religious-art.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for black madonnas\" width=\"132\" height=\"176\" \/><\/span>To be sure: a Virgin of mystery. To be sure: a Virgin for all races and nations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(We had the opportunity to visit her at Czestochowa as well as Montserrat, and the feeling in front of the Black Madonna at these places is comparable to the feeling at Guadalupe or Lourdes.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mysteries? For sure. To wit: why is Mary sometimes depicted as holding a regal scepter?
