{"id":13759,"date":"2018-02-10T15:13:25","date_gmt":"2018-02-10T15:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/?p=13759"},"modified":"2018-02-19T14:44:49","modified_gmt":"2018-02-19T14:44:49","slug":"whats-in-a-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/whats-in-a-name\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s In A Name?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13760\" src=\"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/logoinside.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"45\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/oregonstateparks.org\/index.cfm?do=main.loadImage&amp;Image=Devil%27s%20Lake%20State%20Recreation%20Area\\Devil%27s_Lake.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What&#8217;s in a name?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When it comes to the devil, perhaps more than a moniker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Or is it just happenstance?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For example, on January 2 there was a horrible crash about thirty miles from Lima, Peru, in which fifty-two were killed when a bus plunged 330 feet over a seaside cliff after colliding with a truck at a bend called &#8220;Devil&#8217;s Curve.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this case, of course, the name almost certainly comes from the danger of that bend (as opposed to the other way around).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Still, perhaps not a wise toponym.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And this is true in other locales. One notes the peculiarities of what sometimes seem like periodic accidents at Devil&#8217;s Lake in North Dakota. One can recall from the news <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.inforum.com\/news\/3814341-detroit-lakes-woman-killed-nd-boat-crash\">a person killed and four injured<\/a><\/span> in a boat accident there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The year before that, two men were found dead inside a vehicle underwater there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There also have been folks hurt or lost amid the surrounding cliffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/originals\/d1\/98\/1e\/d1981ee9cac00660b5136f3b54ab67ac.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for devils lake dakota\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From 1995 to 2014, 34 people died in boating-related accidents in North Dakota.\u00a0In Devils Lake, there were a total of 14 boating accidents in that time frame. Of those accidents, there were two deaths in 2002 when a boat capsized and two injuries in separate incidents in 2008.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is also a Devil&#8217;s Lake in Wisconsin. Mysteries here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And in Michigan &#8212; where two years ago a\u00a0snowmobile driver died due to a crash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dnr.wi.gov\/topic\/Parks\/name\/devilslake\/images\/tourism-balance-rock700x300.jpg\" alt=\"A view of Devil's Lake near Balanced Rock\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In Niagara Falls, many mishaps have occurred at a place in the gorge called Devil&#8217;s Hole where Senecas once massacred dozens of European pioneers; in recognition of that, a nearby creek is called Bloody Run. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Folks who have fallen into the turbulent waters in the gorge itself below Bloody Run and next to Devil&#8217;s Hole, which is a cave, claim that they felt almost pushed, while others assert hearing whispers from inside. (Is it only because such a cave lends itself to spookiness?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/falzguy.com\/devils-hole-cave-ent.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for devil's hole niagara\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In Ireland there&#8217;s Devil&#8217;s Elbow, and while no one is saying there is an extraordinary rate of incidents, accidents are certainly not unknown here, including a head-on a bit more than a year ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Accidents happen everywhere there are roads, we all know. It&#8217;s hard to classify some as even vaguely related. How about Devil&#8217;s Swamp in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where a strange black cloud has been seen and where chemical wastes have contaminated twelve square miles of what was once a haven for wildlife and fishermen (and where a puff of caustic smoke once killed a neighboring woman)?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-TmB3Oz7gkZM\/UyXjAmQheKI\/AAAAAAAAWDU\/flwQQANOurw\/s1600\/IMG_6603.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for mount diablo sign\" \/>Near San Francisco,<\/span> there is Mount Diablo. Narrow roads and poor signage have been blamed for an extraordinary number of accidents, especially with bikes. In one four-year period there were twenty-four such accidents. The reason for most: three hundred curves. But what about the twenty-six-year-old male who fell at Mount Diablo in 2016, and more starkly, the woman who several years before took her sixteen-year-old son to the top, at a lookout with a panoramic view of the Bay Area, and there shot him to death before turning her .357 pistol on herself?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Or, the spectral figures claimed on the slopes of the mountain, near a cemetery in which there are 250 buried from a mining company that had been there &#8212; quite a number of dead, considering\u00a0 the community&#8217;s size, many of the deceased bafflingly young&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/P1NdR_2U4wQ\/maxresdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for mount diablo\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In Larryville, Pennsylvania, according to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Archives\/1988\/05\/20\/One-person-was-killed-and-at-least-82-suffered\/4410580104000\/\">United Press International<\/a><\/span>, &#8220;a school bus returning from a field trip overturned Thursday on a narrow road with a sharp curve known as &#8216;Devil&#8217;s Elbow,&#8217; injuring 60 children and parents.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the UK, a\u00a0man went over the cliff at Devil&#8217;s Elbow on what they call the &#8220;Peel to Kirk Michael coast road.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As stated: some of these spots are\u00a0<em>named<\/em> for the devil because they are inherently treacherous, or at least hazardous. Way over off Japan is the Devil&#8217;s Sea (<em>Ma-no Umi<\/em>), where there are Bermuda-Triangle-like tales and also real wrecks and ship or plane disappearances: in the last thousand years, hundreds of vessels (most due to warfare; some &#8220;unexplained&#8221;) have been lost.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.californiacuriosities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/satanrock_devilsgate.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for devil's gate dam\" \/><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spooky, in California, is &#8220;Devil&#8217;s Gate Dam,&#8221; right at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.
