Much has transpired. Remember, however, that whatever cracks there be in the facade, the structure is built on a Rock.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Is it what\u00a0 Malachi Martin called a &#8220;wind-swept house&#8221;?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">There long have been deep-seated problems. Along with current issues plaguing the Vatican (often in the way of what has been said in unfortunately casual communications) is, above all, the stultifying intellectuality &#8212; a spiritual aridity from parishes up to dicasteries &#8212; and the homosexual abuse crisis, which dates back to the 1950s-1970s (when it peaked) and continues in tectonic fashion, with controversies and missteps by bishops from Chile to the U.S. to Australia &#8212; where a\u00a0<em>cardinal<\/em> is on trial. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Brace yourself for what will soon come out of the Pennsylvania attorney general&#8217;s office.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-lFuA1uE53X8\/Th1ChzMQD7I\/AAAAAAAAAEs\/cz0TN5lwrQ8\/s1600\/living_for_god_a_falling_church.gif\" alt=\"Image result for CRUMBLING CHURCH\" width=\"211\" height=\"140\" \/>True disaster. And a crisis that has known no liberal-moderate-conservative boundaries. (The cardinal in Australia, highest ranking to face trial, is a staunch <span style=\"color: #000000;\">conservative.) <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Homosexuality is one reason pews have emptied, not only in Ireland (though here it was a nuclear bomb) but around the world. (And gays claim to be the victims!)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But those of us concerned <\/span>about the current state of the Church can take heart in Archbishop Fulton Sheen, who decades ago foresaw precisely what is occurring &#8212; not the end of Christianity, but of cultural Catholicism<em>. <\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">That is: the final hour<\/span>\u00a0of an era during which <em>Christianity defined societies<\/em> turning into an era of reversal during which the secular suppressed and tried<em> to mold the Church.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">We are at that point, most noticeably with what recently transpired in Ireland, once a bulwark of cultural Catholicism.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Read closely what was foreseen by Archbishop Sheen &#8212; who observed, even in his time, a great wave of Church tumult, and who last spoke in the 1970s (as we have <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/commentary\/video-fulton-sheen-on-the-fourth-crisis-of-the-church\">quoted before<\/a>):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/JwlZs3Te7gU\/hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for archbishop sheen\" width=\"339\" height=\"254\" \/><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cWe are at the end of Christendom,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he said. \u201cNot Christianity, not the Church, but [Christendom]. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;What is Christendom? Christendom is economic, political, social life as inspired by Christian principles. We\u2019re seeing it die. Look at the symptoms. Break up of the family, divorce. Abortion. Immorality. General dishonesty. About fifty years ago, in one of the big Protestant churches in New York, a Mrs. Vanderbilt came into this church after her divorce and all the Protestant people turned their backs on her. That would not happen today. There are two kinds of barbarians. The active barbarians from without and the passive barbarians from within. We are not in as much danger from the active ones as the passive ones. Anyone who has left this country for five years and then come back is shocked by what he sees.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cWe get used to things.<\/span>\u00a0The air that we breathe, the press that we read, the television that we see, in no instance is inspired by Christian principles. There is a tendency to go down to meet the world, not to lift the world up. We are afraid to be unpopular. We are at the end of Christendom.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhat is the attack on the Church today? It\u2019s the world. The spirit of the world. Today we have to conform to the world or we are abandoned. Our Lord said\u00a0<em>\u2018I have taken you out of the world\u2019<\/em>\u00a0and we say, \u2018No, we have to win the world. To win it, you have to be one with it.\u2019 Our Lord said,\u00a0<em>\u2018I pray not for the world.\u2019<\/em>\u00a0He\u2019s praying for the spirit of the world. And this is the easiest way to fall off the log. It\u2019s so simple. And it\u2019s justified by a thousand reasons. The Vatican Council said we have to go into the world.
