{"id":1581,"date":"2016-07-23T13:38:55","date_gmt":"2016-07-23T13:38:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/?p=1581"},"modified":"2016-08-24T13:05:10","modified_gmt":"2016-08-24T13:05:10","slug":"men-in-black","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/men-in-black\/","title":{"rendered":"Occult Watch: &#8216;Men In Black&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spiritdaily.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.spiritdaily.com\/logoinside.gif\" alt=\"Logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"38\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>We&#8217;d place it in the category of &#8220;woolgathering&#8221;: UFOs, the Loch Ness monster, and bigfoot and like that, the reports, so popular among our young, that mysterious &#8220;men in black&#8221; are spotted in strange circumstances, dressed sinisterly in dark suits and seeming to monitor and intimidate folks who have seen what perhaps they should not. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Usually, it follows in the wake of someone spotting precisely a &#8220;UFO.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/db_images\/wlt012.JPG\" \/>Actually, while currently popularized because of a movie by the same name some years back (actually a comedy, <em>Men in Black<\/em>, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith; there also have been sequels), the notion has been around at least since the 1950s and 1960s, finding its probable origin in 1947, when a fellow named\u00a0Harold Dahl claimed to have been warned by a man in a dark suit not to talk about an alleged <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Maury Island incident\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maury_Island_incident\" target=\"_blank\">UFO sighting on Maury Island<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on Puget Sound in the state of Washington.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><br \/>\nThat&#8217;s somewhat interesting because 1947 was also the year of one of the most famous &#8220;UFO&#8221; sightings in history, that of pilot Kenneth Arnold, at Mount Rainier, which is in the same state of Washington. (This was before the even more famous case in Roswell, New Mexico; Arnold said their movements were like &#8220;saucers&#8221; skipping on water: thus the term &#8220;flying saucers.&#8221;)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Then, in the mid 1950s,<\/span> a UFO buff\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Albert K. Bender\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albert_K._Bender\">Albert K. Bender<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(beware of UFO buffs) claimed he was visited by men in dark suits who threatened and warned him not to continue investigating UFOs. (Bender concluded the men in black were secret government agents whose assignment was to suppress evidence of UFOs.)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>A well-known author of esoterica,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"John Keel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Keel\">John Keel<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0similarly claimed to have had encounters with men in black and interestingly referred to them as &#8220;demonic supernaturals&#8221; with &#8220;dark skin and\/or \u201cexotic\u201d facial features.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Just this week, the London <em>Express<\/em> reported that a man\u00a0&#8220;claimed in a report to [a UFO] organization that he, his son and his son&#8217;s girlfriend saw twelve strange orange objects in the sky above St. Augustine, Florida, before receiving the visits.&#8221; We&#8217;ll take it under advisement.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/0\/00\/Tulsa_Saucers_July12_1947.jpg\/250px-Tulsa_Saucers_July12_1947.jpg\" \/>As one follower of this domain put it &#8212; interestingly (at least for our purposes) &#8212; men in black represent &#8220;experiences&#8221; that &#8220;don\u2019t seem to have occurred in the world of consensus reality.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>This is potentially germane because when it isn&#8217;t simple fantasy, exaggeration, or hoax (and there have been clear-cut fabrications), one wonders if it all might be added to the category of modern spiritual deceptions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">We believe that&#8217;s the case<\/span> with at least some of those unidentified lights in the sky: that what they call &#8220;UFOs&#8221; and &#8220;flying saucers&#8221; may be the handiwork of deceiving spirits, when they aren&#8217;t satellites, space debris, or military tests (Indians even called them &#8220;spirit lights&#8221;). <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Meanwhile, as far as men in black, one might ask: if angels can appear in human form &#8212; as flesh and blood, which is so widely reported (the Bible explicitly states that mysterious strangers can be angels in disguise, <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/hebrews\/13-2.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Hebrews 13:2<\/a><\/span>) &#8212;\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>cannot demons (who so often mimic the works of God)?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Summer ruminations.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>News websites like\u00a0<em>Buzzfeed<\/em> which are closely followed by those of college age have featured men in black, focusing on cases such as h<\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">otel manager Shane Sovar and a security guard in Niagara Falls who reported seeing a large triangular UFO outside the building. A group called the Aerial Phenomenon Investigations Team looked into the incident. They (along with three other witnesses) reported that a couple weeks later, two unidentified &#8220;men in black&#8221; visited the hotel.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/img.buzzfeed.com\/buzzfeed-static\/static\/2016-04\/29\/13\/enhanced\/webdr02\/enhanced-32556-1461951891-1.png\" alt=\"After they had seen the Man in Black outside their apartment for three days, the couple\u2019s friend Timothy Green Beckley decided to get a closer look and actually captured this photo of the man:\" \/>While most, supposedly, look human, this time the description was of two tall\u00a0men with black suits, identical faces, no eyebrows or eyelashes, and extremely pale skin. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Can we really put stock in this?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>There are what psychoanalysts call cultural &#8220;archetypes.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Famed psychologist, Carl Gustav Jung posited the concept of &#8220;archetypes&#8221; in a theory of the human psyche, believing that universal, mythic characters (see sea monsters, perhaps) reside within the &#8220;collective unconscious&#8221; of folks the world over. (Then again, Jung also closely followed psychic phenomena.)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>We report. You figure it out (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/spiritdaily.com\/contactus.htm\">and let us know<\/a> <\/span>when you do).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">In another case,<\/span> in 1967, reported the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/05\/23\/men-in-black-inspired-ufos-government-agents_n_1536996.html\" target=\"_blank\">Huffington Post<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/em>(caution: tabloid),<\/span>\u00a0&#8220;Robert Richardson was driving his car at night in Toledo, Ohio, when he hit something, which, he claimed, then vanished. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He found a piece of metal that he believed originated from the mysterious thing he hit. A few days later, two men, wearing black hats and sunglasses and driving a black 1953 Cadillac, visited Richardson at his home at 11 p.m. to ask questions. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A week later, two other men arrived, dressed in black suits, and asked Richardson to turn over the metal to them. When he informed them he had sent it for analysis, he said, they threatened to harm his wife if he didn\u2019t get it back. He never heard from them again.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Then there&#8217;s a doctor named\u00a0Dr. Herbert Hopkins. The &#8220;respected&#8221; family physician from Old Orchard Beach, Maine, was home alone on the night of Sept. 11, 1976 when he was visited by a man in a black suit and wearing a derby hat. \u00a0At the time, Hopkins was studying a UFO incident. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;The odd visitor told Hopkins to take a coin out of his pocket and hold it in the palm of his hand,&#8221; reported the\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>. &#8220;He said, \u2018Watch the coin,\u2019 and it started to develop a silver color instead of copper, and then the silver became bluish and the penny was getting quite fuzzy, out of focus, blurred, and then it simply was gone \u2014 it slowly<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">dematerialized.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/img.buzzfeed.com\/buzzfeed-static\/static\/2016-04\/29\/14\/enhanced\/webdr09\/enhanced-24906-1461954312-1.png\" alt=\"The next encounter happened pretty recently...and with someone you might know: Dan Aykroyd.\" \/>Certainly, it is &#8220;out there&#8221; &#8212; very far.<\/span> A supernatural element? Or straightforward sci-fi? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The actor (and comedian) Dan Akyroid, who has a keen interest in UFOs, once claimed that in January of 2002 during production of\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ifc.com\/2011\/09\/dan-aykroyd-ufo-britney-spears\" target=\"_blank\">a series<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he had sold to the Sci Fi Channel (called<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i>Out There<\/i>; indeed!), &#8220;which would break serious ground revolving around topics like UFOs, crop circles, and alien abductions,&#8221; says <em>Buzzfeed,<\/em> &#8220;on a break<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/05\/23\/men-in-black-inspired-ufos-government-agents_n_1536996.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">during interviews for the upcoming show<\/span>,<\/a><\/span>\u00a0he stepped outside and saw a black Ford sedan with a Man in Black standing outside it.
