What is the best-known American artwork of the 20th century?<\/p>\n

Judging from the replications found on museum-shop umbrellas, you might think it\u2019s Hopper\u2019s\u00a0Nighthawks<\/i>, a Warhol silkscreen\u00a0or one of Pollock\u2019s drip paintings.<\/p>\n

But in terms of widespread diffusion,\u00a0none of those works has reached the audience of Head of Christ (1940), the American Protestant icon presenting a relatable Jesus with a kindly affect.\u00a0With at least a half-billion reproductions in circulation, there are more versions of this image than there are people in the United States.<\/p>\n
