It&#8217;s in\u00a0<em>Luke<\/em> 9: &#8220;<span class=\"text Luke-9-37-Luke-9-40\">Then on the following day, as they came down the hill-side, a great crowd met him. Suddenly a man from the crowd shouted out, &#8216;Master, please come and look at my son! He\u2019s my only child, and without any warning some spirit gets hold of him and he calls out suddenly. Then it convulses him until he foams at the mouth, and only after a fearful struggle does it go away and leave him bruised all over. I begged your disciples to get rid of it, but they couldn\u2019t.&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span id=\"en-PHILLIPS-881\" class=\"text Luke-9-41\" style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201c&#8217;You really are an unbelieving and difficult people,&#8217; replied Jesus. &#8216;How long must I be with you, how long must I put up with you? And everybody present was amazed at this demonstration of the power of God.&#8221; As a Church, we need to get back to supernaturalism.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">But not of the dark kind:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">From the <em><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/video\/index\/604084\/pagans\/\">Atlantic<\/a>:<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image__src\" src=\"https:\/\/compote.slate.com\/images\/28dfb2bc-7365-463d-9a0d-10bff804aad4.jpeg?width=780&amp;height=520&amp;rect=1560x1040&amp;offset=0x0\" alt=\"A person sits in front of tarot cards. \" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The demographic trends tell an incontrovertible story: The\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/video\/index\/588481\/last-sermon\/\">American Church<\/a>\u00a0is in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2017\/07\/robert-jones-white-christian-america\/532587\/\">decline<\/a>. In 2018 and 2019,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/2019\/10\/17\/in-u-s-decline-of-christianity-continues-at-rapid-pace\/\">65 percent<\/a>\u00a0of Americans identified as Christians\u2014down 12 percent from the previous decade. While Christianity\u2019s numbers and influence are waning, other demographics are gaining ground; by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2016\/07\/the-eclipse-of-white-christian-america\/490724\/\">2051<\/a>, if current trends continue, religiously unaffiliated Americans, so-called\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2019\/09\/atheism-fastest-growing-religion-us\/598843\/\">religious nones<\/a>, could constitute as large a percentage of the population as Protestants.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Occultism is also on the rise. In 2014, the Pew Research Center found that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/05\/RLS-II-FINAL-TOPLINE-FOR-FIRST-RELEASE.pdf\">0.4 percent of Americans<\/a>, or about 1 million to 1.5 million people, identify as Wicca or Pagan\u2014<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/quartzy\/1411909\/the-explosive-growth-of-witches-wiccans-and-pagans-in-the-us\/\">potentially outnumbering<\/a>\u00a0the 1.4 million mainline members of the Presbyterian Church. By 2050, the number of practicing pagans in America is\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/03\/PF_15.04.02_ProjectionsFullReport.pdf\">projected to triple<\/a>\u00a0to 6.6 million, or 1.5 percent of the population.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">To tell the story of the dramatic rise of neo-paganism in America, though, you quickly run into a roadblock. \u201cNo two pagans seem to agree on the same definition\u201d of\u00a0<em>paganism<\/em>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iqbalahmed.com\/\">Iqbal Ahmed<\/a>, who spent two years researching a large community of pagans in Southern California for his short documentary\u00a0<em>Pagans<\/em>, told me. Because of this confusion, Ahmed said, \u201cit\u2019s no wonder that relatively informed laypeople might have still have misconceptions about paganism.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/ck4ez1u3700113g5ycdibnzct@published\" data-word-count=\"71\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">From <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/human-interest\/2019\/12\/occult-astrology-mystical-decade-2010s.html\">Salon<\/a><\/span>:<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/ck4ez1u3700113g5ycdibnzct@published\" data-word-count=\"71\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Marlene Vargas and Alex Naranjo had been making a decent living in real estate when the economy collapsed. \u201cWe were devastated,\u201d Vargas said in an email recently. \u201cAlex and I both gravitated towards more than just religion for answers and always felt connected to an esoteric practice.\u201d Coming from religious backgrounds, the couple wanted something to connect to that wasn\u2019t as austere. \u201cThis is when we found wellness, self-love and magic.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/ck4ez1u3f00123g5yt4kn8ea8@published\" data-word-count=\"70\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In 2010, the couple opened a \u201cmetaphysical shop\u201d in Echo Park, Los Angeles, called the House of Intuition. And it\u2019s a good thing \u2014 scary good, in fact.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph--left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Although not exactly a ratings juggernaut, the 10-11 p.m. Thursday horror show has been building a devoted following while steadily adding to its impressive stack of rave reviews. Recognizing the power of \u201cEvil,\u201d CBS executives quickly demonstrated their faith by making it one of only two new fall starters already blessed with a second-season order (the other is Fox\u2019s animated comedy \u201cBless the Harts\u201d).\u00a0For the uninitiated, \u201cEvil\u201d is a series that stalks along the tricky line between science and religion. Katja Herbers plays Kristen Bouchard, a skeptical forensic psychologist hired by the Catholic Church to work with \u201cpriest-in-training\u201d David Acosta (Mike Colter) and carpenter-contractor Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) to investigate mysteries that could be supernatural \u2014 everything from supposed hauntings to miracles.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Perhaps it is also no coincidence that there have been curious slips-of-the-tongue.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>From <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.10news.com\/news\/fact-or-fiction\/fact-or-fiction-christmas-parade-accidentally-promoted-satan-instead-of-santa\">ABC10 San Diego<\/a>:<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Did a newspaper in Vancouver accidentally advertise that people could take pictures with Satan during a Christmas parade?\u00a0Yes.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">On November 21st, the Comox Valley Record printed an ad with an unfortunate typo. Instead of touting pictures with Santa, they accidentally wrote Satan.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">And from WSB-TV Atlanta:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"NaturalImage-image aligncenter\" title=\"View image on Twitter\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/EJ7AAjCVAAAOGTW?format=png&amp;name=900x900\" alt=\"View image on Twitter\" width=\"501\" height=\"364\" data-image=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/EJ7AAjCVAAAOGTW\" data-image-format=\"png\" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A newspaper advertisement for \u201cpictures with Satan\u201d generated a lot of buzz for the Sunday Christmas parade in Comox Valley, and a bit of embarrassment for the publication.\u00a0&#8220;There is no excuse for it, and we aren&#8217;t about to use this space to make any,&#8221;\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.comoxvalleyrecord.com\/opinion\/editorial-ad-lacked-attention-to-detail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Comox Valley Record wrote in an apologetic editorial<\/a>. &#8220;The same number of eyes proofed the ad as with anything that runs through the advertising and production departments.
