Also known as Our Lady of the Cape Shrine, it is Canada’s National Shrine to the Blessed Mother.

The original small wooden structure was built in 1694. A second parish church was built in 1747 to replace the first church, and this building still stands and is considered the oldest church in Canada in which Mass is celebrated daily. By 1867, more and more parishioners started coming to church; eventually, the church was too small, and a larger church was required. The stones and building material were purchased and were to be brought over in the winter across the frozen Saint Lawrence River.

 [For Full Story]

From Tourisme-Trois-Rivières:

Our Lady of the Cape Shrine is the third largest Marian Shrine in North America. In 1879 the parishioners of the small church that existed on the site decided that they needed a larger church and set about building one. They relied on stone that had to be transported across the nearby St Lawrence river but in the exceptionally mild winter that year the river thawed earlier than usual preventing the transportation of the stone. Parishioners were urged to pray and soon after an ice “bridge” formed across the river and the stone was brought across. In 1888 the church was built and dedicated and three people witnessed a statue of the Virgin Mary, that had been placed there, open its eyes – an event that has become known as the “Miracle of the Eyes”. The statue is still there and I would recommend visitors list the old stone church first and see it before visiting the larger and modern basilica built nearby for today’s worshippers. A gift shop and cafe is available.

+

<span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Opened in 1964, the monumental basilica contains two treasures: the Casavant organ, consisting of 5,425 pipes, and the stained glass windows by Father Jan Tillemans, a Dutch Oblate and master artisan. The Old Shrine is another jewel. Used for worship starting in 1720, this religious building is considered the oldest preserved stone church in Canada. The site dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which was visited by Pope John Paul in September 1984, is also worth visiting for its shady gardens and unparalleled view of the Saint Lawrence River.
