Now, it&#8217;s all about refined white flour (which turns into sugar).<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">They are an important factor, for sure. They cause much weight gain. When not &#8220;burned,&#8221; sugar turns into fat. It also can help clog arteries and raise blood pressure.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">But just about nothing has been said &#8212; until recently &#8212; about a hidden and yet truly big player in gaining pounds: salt. We have mentioned this before. There is new information.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Salt is terrific. Christ even used it\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?book_id=47&amp;chapter=5&amp;verse=13&amp;version=49&amp;context=verse\">as a metaphor<\/a>. He called those who are good the &#8220;salt of the earth.&#8221; He spoke about the pleasure it gives the taste buds. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with salt, per se. In fact, we would die without it. In the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?book_id=3&amp;chapter=2&amp;verse=13&amp;version=49&amp;context=verse\">Old Testament<\/a>, it was an offering.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Too much, however, is another issue.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And your expanding waistline may be linked to that.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Consider that each time you ingest too much salt, it tells the body that there&#8217;s an overload of sodium and the body immediately begins to retain water in an effort to dilute it. It&#8217;s like little men entering your body and shouting, &#8220;Store water.&#8221; This is because our systems were created so ingeniously: By retaining water, the body as designed by God keeps the right balance in the body.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Did you know that the level of salt in the blood is nearly the same as that in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seashellsandsuch.com\/articles\/seawaterlikeblood.php\">sea water<\/a>\u00a0(along with other minerals)? We match nature. In order for our bodies to function properly, it&#8217;s important that the concentration of electrolytes in the body remain\u00a0<i>constant<\/i>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And every time we ingest salt in a way that would skew this &#8212; that is excessive and would mess it up &#8212; the body brings water into the picture. It accumulates liquid. We put on weight.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">That&#8217;s critical\u00a0because water is heavy. A\u00a0 gallon weighs eight pounds.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Thus, it&#8217;s not unusual to see a temporary weight gain of<i>\u00a0three or more pounds<\/i>\u00a0due to a\u00a0<i>single salty food or snack<\/i>\u00a0&#8212; even though the snack certainly doesn&#8217;t weigh three pounds nor even contain many calories.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Note your waistline the morning after being heavy-handed with the salt shaker or eating high-sodium foods like pizza or chips.\u00a0<i>It&#8217;s salt &#8212; refined salt that bloats you.<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Restaurants are notorious for over-salting everything. Check out the food channel and watch how chefs pour it on. Fast foods are especially culpable. It&#8217;s why restaurant food tastes so good. And it&#8217;s addictive: the day after eating a highly salted meal, we often crave that meal or other food because we are <em>craving the salt.<\/em> It&#8217;s the zing to our taste buds we want &#8212; not the food itself! Although the weight gain is temporary, we often perpetuate it by using too much salt regularly. It becomes a vicious cycle.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Salt, salt, salt,&#8221;\u00a0said Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which surveys restaurants and recently came out with another. &#8220;If the meal was high in fat, it was high in salt. If it was low in fat, it was high in salt. It&#8217;s &#8216;Salt City&#8217; at restaurants.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Some meals at restaurants &#8212; particularly the chain and fast-food ones &#8212; contain <i>two to four days&#8217; worth of salt.<\/i>\u00a0Look at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ksl.com\/?nid=148&amp;sid=6448858\">these contents<\/a>!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Every time you buy anything, check the sodium content. If it&#8217;s above five, eat it sparingly. Canned and processed foods are the biggest culprits. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/publications\/4059e\/#content\">Here<\/a><\/span> are safe levels.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"n3VNCb\" src=\"https:\/\/extension.umaine.edu\/publications\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2017\/09\/sodium-nutrition-label.jpg\" alt=\"Bulletin #4059, Sodium Content of Your Food - Cooperative Extension Publications - University of Maine Cooperative Extension\" width=\"297\" height=\"570\" data-noaft=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>There are many hidden sources of salt. It&#8217;s used in frozen turkeys. It&#8217;s in ice cream and cheese. It&#8217;s in condiments. It&#8217;s in tomato sauce (big-time). The key is not total avoidance but moderation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">One\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk\/\">nutritional website\u00a0<\/a>goes so far as to state: &#8220;Cutting down on sugar and fat is not necessary to lose weight. Nor is it necessary to be more physically active in order to lose weight. All that is normally necessary to lose weight is to eat less salt\/sodium, and, preferably, eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, because the potassium these contain helps to displace excess sodium from the body.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Drink a lot of water\u00a0and it will flush out excess sodium and tell the body that it <i>does not need to retain any more water.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Noted one dietician: &#8220;If you eat right and exercise at the intensity, frequency and duration proper for you, but still can&#8217;t get rid of a little paunch here and there, you&#8217;re probably just not drinking enough water.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">&#8220;No need to get defensive. You&#8217;re actually quite normal. Most people don&#8217;t drink enough water. Most people are also carrying around a few more pounds than they would be if they did drink enough water. If you can&#8217;t seem to get that weight off, try drowning your sorrows in nature&#8217;s magical weight-loss mineral (water).&#8221; As you drink a lot of water, you&#8217;ll feel the salt leave, often within twenty-four hours.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Besides piling on weight,\u00a0&#8220;salt is probably the single most harmful ingredient in the food supply because it boosts blood pressure, which causes heart attacks and strokes,&#8221; said Jacobson. You can easily cut down on much of the volume without losing taste.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Do you check sodium on the labels when you shop? Do you pay attention to how salty certain foods are? Are you heavy-handed with the shaker &#8212; and frustrated in attempts to lose weight? Do you pray for the balance that God designed for you? Have you tried Himalayan and other unrefined salts?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Be the salt of the earth<\/span> &#8212; but don&#8217;t overdose on it!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It is the hidden cause of many extra pounds. And it&#8217;s difficult to avoid without keeping constant vigilance.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Ask the Holy Spirit to remind you.
