The Vatican\u2019s\u00a0Secretariat of State<\/a>\u00a0has issued an instruction regarding the celebration of Mass in St. Peter\u2019s Basilica, suppressing Masses said by a priest by himself, and restricting the celebration of the extraordinary form of Mass in the Latin rite to one altar in the crypt of the basilica.<\/p>\n

The instruction comes from the First Section of the Secretariat of State, which deals with the general affairs of the church and is headed by Venezuelan-born Archbishop Pe\u00f1a Parra. He is the third-highest ranking official in the Roman Curia and is known as the \u201csubstitute\u201d (or chief of staff).<\/p>\n

A new letter from the Vatican Secretariat of State has banned the private celebration of Masses at side altars in St. Peter\u2019s Basilica, effective March 22.<\/p>\n

The regulation might seem tailored to meet COVID restrictions, as Italy prepares to tighten its pandemic measures once again. However, the new rule appears to be permanent. Another change – Mass offered in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite will be limited to the Clementine Chapel in the Vatican Grotto.<\/p>\n
