{"id":6378,"date":"2017-03-13T21:37:44","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T21:37:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/?p=6378"},"modified":"2017-03-14T12:19:24","modified_gmt":"2017-03-14T12:19:24","slug":"did-you-know-about-fire-stigmata","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/did-you-know-about-fire-stigmata\/","title":{"rendered":"Did You Know About &#8216;Fire&#8217; Stigmata?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3127\" src=\"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/logoinside.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"45\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>You&#8217;ve perhaps heard about the &#8220;Flame of Love.&#8221; That&#8217;s a devotion, of course &#8212; and a powerful one, especially during Lent.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>But here&#8217;s a question:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Have you ever heard of &#8220;<em>incendiary amoris<\/em>&#8221; &#8212; what might be called &#8220;fire stigmata&#8221;?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>That, we are told, is an\u00a0<em>actual<\/em> flame of love!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sskparish.org\/skp\/_zumu_user_image_cache\/St_stanislaus_kostka.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for st. kostka\" \/>And strange as it may seem, it was known to saints and mystics through the ages, including recent ones.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>You heard that right: actual heat and sometimes fire would erupt in or from their bodies, as blood does in &#8220;normal&#8221; stigmatic wounds, and their bodies would experience blazing interior temperatures.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Scientifically, they call it mystical &#8220;thermogenesis.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>We draw here from an author recently contacted, Larry E. Arnold, an electrical-mechanical engineer who now investigates unusual phenomena.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>In a book called\u00a0<em>Ablaze!<\/em>, Arnold, among a myriad of other cases, cites historical examples of holy Catholics who have experienced the alleged manifestation. It seemed especially prevalent in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Some were said<\/span> to have been so imbued and energized with holy love that &#8220;in the coldest winter weather they&#8217;d throw off their stiflingly warm clothing, fling open windows to gasp for frigid air, and pant to cool their bodies.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Religious passion so affected Saint Stanislaus Kostka (who died in 1568) that, according to a biographer, &#8220;he was obliged to apply cloths dipped in cold water to his breast in order to temper the violence of the love he felt.&#8221; (Asked what was wrong, the saint replied simply, &#8220;I am burning, I am burning.&#8221;)\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>When we burn with love on earth, it seems, this lessens what we need to &#8220;burn off&#8221; in that intermediate state called purgatory.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/f\/f6\/Orsola_Benincasa.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for Orsola Benincasa\" \/>During her ecstasies,<\/span> the hands of Venerable Osola Benincasa (who died in 1618) became so hot that &#8212; it was claimed &#8212; water boiled and steamed in a vessel when she dipped them in to cool off. At times, white smoke was said to issue from her throat.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>For our discernment!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Saint Catherine of Genoa (who died around the same time &#8212; 1655) exhibited both regular stigmata and\u00a0<em>incendium amoris<\/em>. Eruptions of &#8220;extraordinary heat phenomena&#8221; were said to torment her, with white smoke coming also from her throat, &#8220;as if ascending from a brazier lighted within.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>So pure was the great love Saint Catherine had &#8212; the passionate, &#8220;hot&#8221; love &#8212; that her corpse was warm for days after her heart stopped beating (a medical impossibility, of course).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>So hot inside was a Dominican nun named Maria Villani that amazed witnesses in Naples once claimed they could hear &#8220;a hissing sound like that of water falling on a sheet of red-hot iron&#8221; when she drank water, consumed as she was &#8220;by an almost insupportable flame of love.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/7\/7b\/Venerabile-serafina-di-dio-fondatrice-.jpg\" alt=\"Image illustrative de l'article S\u00e9raphine de Dieu\" \/>Can you imagine loving God to that extent!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">After Communion,<\/span> the face of a mystic, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A9raphine_de_Dieu\">Venerable Serafina di Deo<\/a><\/span>, would glow with a red flame while her eyes seemed sparked by fire. Such was also depicted in relation to Saint Philip Neri.\u00a0We hear Padre Pio experienced mystical heat, although we&#8217;re not yet conversant with the details in his case).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Hard to believe. But too many cases to ignore. There was a Franciscan nun, Arnold points out, from whose stigmatic side wound emanated hot blood. Here we see the two types of alleged phenomena dovetailing.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>In 1798, it was reported that a three-inch Cross spontaneously burned itself into the flesh of Anna Catherine Emmerich, and her skin blistered and oozed an extraordinarily hot, colorless fluid.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>An abbess named Venerable Mother Beatrice Mary of Jesus was said in an ecstatic state to have spewed ashes.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flameoflove.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/kindelmann1.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for Elizabeth Kindelmann\" \/>In Church-approved messages<\/span> received by\u00a0Elizabeth Kindelmann &#8212; a stigmatic &#8220;victim soul&#8221; from Budapest who received years of what are now called the &#8220;Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary&#8221; &#8212; was this (from Jesus):\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>&#8220;Renounce yourself, for we have a great mission for you<\/em>. <em>You&#8217;ll only be able to do it if you completely renounce yourself. You are free to choose. You will accomplish it only if you want.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Said the Blessed Mother (allegedly): &#8220;Take this Flame&#8230; It&#8217;s the Flame of Love of my love<\/em>.<em>\u00a0Ignite your own heart with it and pass it on to others!&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>&#8220;This Flame full of blessings springing from my Immaculate Heart and that I am giving you must go from heart to heart,&#8221; <\/em>added Mary, allegedly.<em> &#8220;It will be the Great Miracle of light blinding Satan. It is the fire of love and concord. I obtained this grace on your behalf from the Eternal Father by virtue of the five Blessed Wounds of my Divine Son.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>It was the contention of this Hungarian mystic that the Lord told her whoever fasts on Mondays <em>&#8220;with bread and water while referring to the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary delivers the soul of a priest from purgatory.
