A concrete pad. Can you think of tragedy that way? <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Let&#8217;s call it the &#8220;bumper sticker of the week&#8221;: Often, the biggest favor God does is level the playing field.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Of course, that often means<\/span> tearing down things. God&#8217;s a builder and sometimes that involves demolition. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">What He demolishes is our evil, which can be in the way of our obsessions, our lusts, and especially our <em>self<\/em>ishness.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Tame the &#8220;self&#8221; and you&#8217;re halfway there!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Most of the time<\/span> when God has to clean house, it&#8217;s because our pride has so badly messed things up (even our view of religion) that rubble has piled up around us or there are cracks to cement.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">We get blinded. We get attached to the rubble. We think it&#8217;s concrete, when it is really cardboard. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">And we let it rise on all sides: ambition, over-competitiveness, unforgiveness, envy, things that always have an &#8220;I&#8221; to blame.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">In other cases, it&#8217;s not so much that we have done anything wrong but that God is trying to clear the way for our expansion.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Whatever the case, when &#8220;devastation&#8221; comes, we should always look on it as an opportunity. One 9\/11 widow, Cheryl McGuinness, whose husband was the pilot of one of the planes that hit the Trade Center, says she wants other people to realize that no matter what pains occur in life\u2014&#8221;no&#8221;matter how horrific they can&#8221;be&#8221;\u2014those tragedies can be overcome by &#8220;having a foundation that we can draw on in times of trial.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Even illness and accidents have their place.\u00a0<i>They put things in (sudden) perspective. <\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">As John Paul once wrote, illumination comes from purgation.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">So many times in life,<\/span> we just can&#8217;t seem to reach holiness without God sweeping everything aside. Major upheavals in our health, families, or careers are often enough to place things in a new, healthier perspective. It&#8217;s amazing how quickly the world we hold so dear can evaporate! <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">When things collapse (jobs, education, bank accounts), we discover how fleeting they were to begin with.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">It&#8217;s God Who is always there\u2014<\/span>He is the only permanence\u2014and what He is trying to show is that we should cling to Him, that we&#8217;ll be uneasy until we rest on <i>His<\/i>\u00a0foundation. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">He never said life would be easy, just worth it!<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Persistence and even joy in the face of trial (especially surrender to the Divine Will) paves the road to the miraculous.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">&#8220;Anytime I have ever stressed about not having enough money to pay the bills, the situation gets worse,&#8221; noted an e-mailer named Julie. &#8220;The more I try to control it, the less control I have. The very instant I give it all to God and bless and bless and bless the financial situation, however grim, the money flows in ways that truly do not seem physically possible.&#8221; Go with His flow.
