{"id":67647,"date":"2024-05-05T07:05:10","date_gmt":"2024-05-05T11:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/?p=67647"},"modified":"2024-05-06T22:49:54","modified_gmt":"2024-05-07T02:49:54","slug":"mailbag-the-incredible-mass-of-padre-pio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/mailbag-the-incredible-mass-of-padre-pio\/","title":{"rendered":"Mailbag: The Incredible Mass Of Padre Pio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>From Frank Rega:<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"post-title entry-title\">Serving the Holy Mass of Padre Pio<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-header\">\n<div class=\"post-header-line-1\">&#8220;The Mass of Padre Pio!\u00a0 No one will be able to describe it.\u00a0 Only one who has had the privilege of living it can understand. . . &#8220;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>+<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"post-body-717030461453645280\" class=\"post-body entry-content\">\n<h4>Fra Modestino Fucci (1917-2011) was a saintly lay brother who lived alongside Padre Pio at the Friary in San Giovanni Rotondo for many years.\u00a0 He often had the privilege of serving at the traditional Latin Mass celebrated by St. Pio.\u00a0 The saint&#8217;s death in 1968 signified the culmination and close of a great era in the Church.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Brother Modestino carefully recorded his impressions of what it was like to serve at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass celebrated by St. Pio, and they have been published in the Spring 2014 issue of the Friary&#8217;s magazine, &#8220;The Voice of Padre Pio.&#8221;\u00a0 The following excerpts are presented, with permission, from the article &#8220;Witness to the Padre,&#8221; pp. 19-20.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frankrega.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEi1ZZiPqWJi_mtj2IxhjW7o5hNZYyYmm7FmAUFuzX2Fn8-X9cCtPR8JiaYcRVaXef3eJyvVQ2f5XDGeb3joCJDUOlmBoV767s6ptcRDxBT_lDW1MtsWYDBYZeekGc5qONQxsb84KuT_bPg\/w343-h400\/Padre-Pio-3.jpg\" alt=\"www.frankrega.com\" width=\"343\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4>I would watch and observe Padre Pio closely every time, from the moment he left his cell at dawn to celebrate Mass.\u00a0 I would see him in a state of suffering and anxiety.\u00a0 He seemed restless.\u00a0 As soon as he reached the sacristy, where he put on the sacred vestments, I had the impression that already he was no longer aware of what went on around him.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>He was totally absorbed and conscious of what he was about the fulfill.\u00a0 His face which was of normal color became frighteningly pale when he put on the amice.\u00a0 From that moment onwards he paid no more attention to anyone.\u00a0 Clothed in the sacred vestments he made his way to the altar.\u00a0 Even though I walked ahead of him, I was aware that his gait became more dragging, his face sorrowful.\u00a0 He seemed to stoop always more, as if, I thought, crushed beneath the weight of a gigantic invisible cross.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Once he arrived at the altar he kissed it lovingly and his pale face became inflamed.\u00a0 His cheeks would become crimson, his skin translucent so that one almost saw the flow of blood that rushed to his cheeks.\u00a0 After the <i>Confiteor,\u00a0<\/i>he beat his breast with hollow and heavy blows as if\u00a0accusing himself of all the worst sins committed by man.\u00a0 His eyes remained closed without being able to prevent big tears that disappeared into his thick beard.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>At the <i>Gospel<\/i>, as he announced the Word of God, it seemed as if he fed himself with these words, tasting their infinite sweetness.\u00a0 Immediately after, the colloquy between Padre Pio and the Eternal began.\u00a0 This colloquy caused Padre Pio to weep abundant tears, that I saw him wipe with a big handkerchief.\u00a0 Padre Pio, who had received the gift of contemplation from the Lord, entered into the abysses of the mystery of the Redemption.\u00a0 The veils of that mystery having been torn by the suffering of his faith and love, all things human disappeared from his sight.\u00a0 Before his gaze was God alone!<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frankrega.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEh5KdkhHfhS3Lfesxjlf04IKLXAM4Ft9EEW-QklpEh6PUWdKt54qJsItdMyZ5xV9eVok46EwQgmCWm8W4dpJIuiuwtGf1XPd3zOC-jyG4O7wqs9EW2GeyBOxzbLckxeYBmqGFx_o8t1feM\/w296-h400\/Padre+Pio+weeps.jpg\" alt=\"www.frankrega.com\" width=\"296\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4>Everyone saw Padre Pio suffering.\u00a0 He pronounced the liturgical prayers with\u00a0 difficulty and interrupted by sobs.\u00a0 The embarrassment the Padre felt at being in the presence and the searching gaze of others was enormous.\u00a0 He would probably have preferred to celebrate Mass in solitude so as to be able to give free rein to his suffering and to his indescribable love.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>In those moments Padre Pio lived sensitively and really felt the Passion of the Lord.\u00a0 Time went quickly, but he was outside time!\u00a0 That was why his Mass lasted an hour and a half or probably more.\u00a0 At the <i>Elevation\u00a0<\/i>his suffering reached its height.\u00a0 Watching his weeping, his sobbing, I was afraid his heart would burst, that he was about to faint from one moment to the next. God&#8217;s Spirit had by now penetrated his whole body.\u00a0 His soul was rapt in God.\u00a0 He offered himself with Christ, victim for his brothers in exile.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Each gesture of his denoted his relationship with God.\u00a0 His heart must have burned like a volcano.\u00a0 He prayed intensely for his spiritual children, for the sick, and for those who had already left this world.\u00a0 Every now and then he leaned on the altar on his elbows, probably to relieve his wounded feet from the weight of his body.\u00a0 I heard him repeat often through his tears: &#8220;My God! My God!&#8221; A spectacle of faith, love, suffering and emotion that reached the point of drama when the Padre raised the Host.\u00a0 The sleeves of the surplice came down and his torn, bleeding hands were in the sight of all, whereas his gaze was on God!<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>At <i>Communion<\/i>\u00a0he seemed to calm down.\u00a0 Transfigured\u00a0in a passionate, ecstatic abandon, he fed on the Flesh and Blood of Jesus. How much love emanated from\u00a0his face!\u00a0 The people, astounded, could not but kneel before that mystical agony, to that total annihilation of himself.\u00a0The incorporation, the assimilation, the fusion was total!\u00a0\u00a0Padre Pio would remain as if stunned as he tasted all the divine sweetness that only Jesus in the Eucharist knows how to give.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>So the sacrifice of the Mass would be completed with a real participation of love, of suffering and blood.\u00a0 And it brought about many conversions.\u00a0 At the end of the Mass another suffering would devour him &#8211; that of going to the choir loft to remain alone and in silence, recollected in prayer to be able to thank Jesus.\u00a0 He would remain immobile as if without life.\u00a0 If someone had shaken him he would not have noticed, so absorbed was he in divine contemplation.<\/h4>\n<h4>+<\/h4>\n<h4>The Mass of Padre Pio!
