{"id":6885,"date":"2017-04-09T21:32:23","date_gmt":"2017-04-09T21:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/?p=6885"},"modified":"2017-04-11T20:19:36","modified_gmt":"2017-04-11T20:19:36","slug":"robots-and-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/robots-and-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Robots And You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-940\" src=\"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/logoinside.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"45\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/robohub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/xmas-robots-20161.jpg\" alt=\"xmas-robots-2016\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>The more we dehumanize ourselves, the more we distance ourselves from Creation, and the more we distance ourselves from Creation &#8212; from our nature &#8212; the more we distance ourselves from God. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Everyone can cite endless benefits of technology. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>But when is it too much?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sometimes one&#8217;s tempted<\/span> to a blasphemous thought: how much of it was ever meant to be, to begin with?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>At Amazon &#8212; which is swallowing the entire retail industry (leviathan for certain) &#8212; robots assist humans at every turn. You order a product through a computer or iPad or mobile device, their computers figure what you owe and charge your credit card with no intervention of humans, show you related products, tally additional information about you and your inclinations (some of which you may not know about), and then a robot working with incredible sync weaves in and out of other robots at a warehouse the size of six football fields, finding the product on a mobile shelf that it then lifts and transports precisely to a station where (you can exhale now) a human with an iPad simply takes the product from a basket and puts it in a bin on a conveyor belt for shipment.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u00a0(See the remarkable video at the end of this commentary.)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Last year &#8212; last\u00a0<em>year<\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong> &#8212;<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong> Amazon bought 45,000 robots.\u00a0Will real workers one day be as rare as those lost jungle tribes?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">We have grown used <span style=\"color: #000000;\">to<\/span><\/span> Siri and automatic updates and spyware and &#8220;cookies&#8221; and spellchecks and synthetic voices on the phone, <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>spreading so rapidly that\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Jeb Bush recently said Americans should be out protesting against artificial intelligence in the streets. An estimated thirty-four percent of the work force is at risk.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Rivers (like the Amazon) can look smooth on the surface but great dangers can lurk beneath.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Computers are even now diagnosing<\/span> illnesses and issuing prescriptions on a test basis. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Your doctor could one day be a machine. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Up next: a robot celebrating Mass?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>That&#8217;s asked tongue-in-cheek of course, but t<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>o make matters more sobering, there is indeed the trend toward cyber-humans. According to a <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/elon-musk-launches-neuralink-to-connect-brains-with-computers-1490642652\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> report<\/a>,<\/span> Elon Musk, who founded PayPal, is now starting a company called Neuralink which seeks to connect the brains of humans to computers through the use of tiny electrodes implanted in the head. (Using something called \u201cneural lace\u201d technology, electrodes would be able to then upload or download thoughts.)\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">In Sweden, microchips<\/span> are being implanted into volunteers to help them open doors and control office equipment &#8212; so popular that members of a &#8220;cyborg club&#8221; at one company hold regular parties for those with the tiny chips embedded in their hands.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Post-humans?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reports a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">newspaper<\/span>: <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;What could pass for a dystopian vision of the workplace is almost routine at the Swedish startup hub Epicenter. The company offers to implant its workers and startup members with microchips the size of grains of rice that function as swipe cards: to open doors, operate printers, or buy smoothies with a wave of the hand.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Now turn to Disney, which, like Amazon, is always just a bit ahead of the curve.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to another <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">newspaper,<\/span><\/span> the Orlando\u00a0<em>Sentinel:<\/em>\u00a0&#8220;Soft-body robots could someday be roaming Disney theme parks, playing animated, humanoid movie characters and interacting with visitors.\u00a0A new patent application by the entertainment giant doesn\u2019t name specific characters, but it describes \u201cdesigning a robot that will move and physically interact like an animated character.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Brave new world,<\/span> or &#8212; one simply devoid of true humanity &#8212; an evil one? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>The point is that what we need, more than anything &#8212; in this increasingly Ayn Rand world &#8212; is not robots but for people to be\u00a0<em>more<\/em> human, more in touch, more caring, more altruistic, warmer, more engaged, instead of a culture that walks around staring into an Apple or Google device (run largely by robotic intelligence).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>It sounds good: \u00a0such that your eyes can see for miles or zoom in like a microscope &#8212; and instantly know everything about a passing stranger on the basis of face-recognition software with a data base.\u00a0No stretch, for sure, the notion and fear &#8212; ridiculed for decades by the &#8220;grownups-in-the-room&#8221; &#8212; that one day, just as\u00a0<em>Revelation<\/em> seems to warn, we will need a mark on us to purchase items.
