We have addressed that heated debate previously [see<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spiritdaily.net\/animalsfolo1.htm\"><em> here<\/em> <\/a><\/span>and <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spiritdaily.net\/animalsspirits.htm\">here<\/a><\/span><\/em>].<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">What about their <em>earthly<\/em>\u00a0intelligence?<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>And specifically: which animals are smartest?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>What if &#8212; and this would be a wonderment &#8212; a\u00a0<em>parrot <\/em>were near the top? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>That&#8217;s the opinion of\u00a0an expert we spoke to recently, Dr. Irene Pepperberg [top, <em>left<\/em>], of Harvard University, who puts her &#8220;top three&#8221; in animal intelligence as apes, dolphins, and\u00a0parrots &#8212; specifically, the African grey parrot, which Dr. Pepperberg has tested for forty years. &#8220;A lot of the research we&#8217;re showing is that they&#8217;re equal,&#8221; she claims.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>This is a surprise: we have long known about apes, chimps, dogs, and dolphins. But a bird?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Dr. Pepperberg believes the main parrot she worked with, <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alex_(parrot)\">&#8220;Alex&#8221;<\/a> (an African grey, originally so named for &#8220;avian learning experiment&#8221;), bore aspects of intelligence comparable to that &#8220;of five and six year old children, dependent upon the type of studies done with children,&#8221; and might even have possessed emotions.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>She studied Alex for thirty years &#8212; <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/books\/authorinterviews\/10523254\/Irene-Pepperberg-on-teaching-Alex-the-parrot-to-count.html\">until his death in 2007<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>The bird, says the Harvard scientist, could manipulate her in to asking questions he wanted to answer. It would also defuse arguments with the words,\u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;m sorry&#8221; (if she showed irritation). Meanwhile, he would toss food out of the cage in his own pique if he asked for a nut and was given fruit instead.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/2\/2d\/Marilyn_vos_Savant.jpg\/220px-Marilyn_vos_Savant.jpg\" alt=\"Marilyn vos Savant.jpg\" \/>On list of the &#8220;top ten,&#8221;<\/span> one often sees cats at around number &#8220;ten,&#8221; dogs at say number six, octopuses (you read that right) in the top five, now parrots at number three or four, topped only by dolphins and chimpanzees, if they are topped by any animal. But can anyone really formulate such a list? Is any animal smarter than a dog or whale? How can we know?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>We can&#8217;t even precisely gauge the actual intelligence of humans, let alone animals.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>The very woman who holds the record for highest score on the IQ, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marilyn_vos_Savant\">Marilyn vos Savant<\/a><\/span> <em>[left]<\/em>, sees standardized tests as measurements of a variety of mental abilities but thinks intelligence entails so many factors that &#8220;attempts to measure it are useless.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>A test may be able to distinguish certain specific verbal, reading, and mathematical capabilities, but\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>how can a standardized exmination measure creativity, wisdom, intuition, spiritual perception, and common sense? (What measures inspiration from the Holy Spirit?)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">With that understood,<\/span> there is, though, fascinating information. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>For instance, <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>the African grey is the only animal heretofore tested that, astoundingly enough, understands the concept of zero.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>In other words, it will say something like &#8220;none&#8221; if, say, you asked it how many yellow balls there were in a dish that has only red, white, and blue ones.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>It can also distinguish between fifty objects, tell you how many corners an object has (for instance, three on a triangle), pick up the right colors (or at least seven colors), and not just repeat words but string together meaningful phrases (&#8220;Want to go back,&#8221; when it desires to go back into its cage, or in other cases, &#8220;Wanna eat&#8221; when its hungry, sometimes even specifying what it wants to eat: &#8220;Want seed&#8221;).\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>It can also differentiate the size of objects (&#8220;bigger,&#8221; &#8220;smaller,&#8221; &#8220;same,&#8221; and &#8220;different&#8221;).\u00a0If there was ever a misapplied expression, it&#8217;s &#8220;bird brain.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>When called to identify<\/em> an apple, Alex once formulated his own word, labeling it a &#8220;banerry&#8221; (a combination it seemed of &#8220;banana&#8221; and &#8220;cherry,&#8221; two fruits with which he was more familiar).\u00a0Alex even asked questions. The bird once watched himself in the mirror and asked, &#8220;What color?&#8221; (From that, he learned the color &#8220;gray.&#8221;)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>It has nothing to do with brain size but rather the density of neural connections, according to Dr. Pepperberg.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7525\" src=\"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_0347.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_0347.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_0347-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_0347-255x191.jpg 255w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">An alligator has a brain<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> the size of a walnut,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> y<\/span>et scientists at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm in Florida claim during morning feeding they call out names of its gators and the correct one will lift its head.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>There are horses that seem able to accomplish arithmetic. A fish called the astronotus oscillatus (&#8220;oscar&#8221;) may be able to distinguish between faces, recognizing its owner. A crow can use sticks as tools to reach an object.\u00a0If you want to see an amazing video of another African grey, &#8220;Einstein,&#8221; at Knoxville zoo, see the short video at the end of this article.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Perhaps we need to remember<\/span> all this at a time when so many animals are on the brink of extinction &#8212; including the mountain gorilla of Rwanda and Uganda (counted now in the hundreds or dozens). Some studies are indicating that animals have self-awareness.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sad it is, not only extinctions<\/span> (estimates are that up to two-thirds of animal species will be gone by 2050), but how geneticists are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spiritdaily.net\/tower2.htm\">combining DNA to create new types of animals<\/a><\/span>, or cloning them.
