The Greek word translated as \u201cworld\u201d is &#8220;kosmos,&#8221; and Jesus used it in several distinct ways.<\/span><\/div>\n<div tabindex=\"-1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">+<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div tabindex=\"-1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The primary meanings?<\/span><\/div>\n<div tabindex=\"-1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">+<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\":18m\" class=\"ii gt\">\n<div id=\":18l\" class=\"a3s aiL \"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Human society opposed to God.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">+<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"a3s aiL \"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cIf the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.\u201d (<em>John<\/em> 15:18); \u201cMy kingdom is not of this world.\u201d (<em>John<\/em> 18:36); \u201cThe world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil.\u201d (<em>John<\/em> 7:7).<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">+<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"a3s aiL \"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Implication: Jesus saw the world as a realm dominated by sin, pride, and spiritual blindness\u2014and as such, requiring salvation.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">+<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Other biblical citations use \u201cworld\u201d as all the people on earth. Example of that: \u201cFor God so loved the world that he gave his only Son&#8230;\u201d (<em>John<\/em> 3:16)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff; font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">+<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Occasionally, \u201cworld\u201d refers<\/span> to the created, physical realm. \u201cWhat does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?\u201d (<em>Mark<\/em> 8:36). \u201cBefore the world was&#8230;\u201d (<em>John<\/em> 17:5).\u00a0The implication is that Jesus acknowledged the material world but emphasized it was temporary and not to be clung to above spiritual truth.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">+<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"a3s aiL \">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">How often do we adhere to that notion?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Jesus sometimes contrasted the \u201cworld\u201d with the coming Kingdom or Age of God: \u201cThe cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches\u2026\u201d (<em>Matthew<\/em> 13:22). The implication is that the world is fleeting and often a distraction from eternal priorities\u2014which assuredly it is.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"a3s aiL \">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Compare Jesus&#8217; concept of &#8220;the world&#8221; to the current culture of celebrities and billionaires, particularly through the lens of values, power, and purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">First we have power and pride versus meekness and service:\u00a0Jesus calls His followers to humility, service, and self-denial. How does that stack up with the billionaires who are currently so rampant and prominent?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/736x\/8f\/9e\/46\/8f9e464ab64a81dcf63b13a1a3213282.jpg\" alt=\"This may contain: an image of the god with his hands outstretched in front of a spiral galaxy background\" width=\"122\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The world values status, dominance, and self-assurance (read: arrogance).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Lust versus love. Greed versus gratitude (even for suffering).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cWhoever wants to be first<\/span> must be last of all and servant of all.\u201d (<em>Mark<\/em> 9:35). \u201cYou cannot serve both God and money.\u201d (<em>Matthew<\/em> 6:24).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">But how people try! They even use religion to pay for private jets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Modern billionaires? Their culture?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">That often celebrates self-made success,<\/span> power, influence, and ambition. Aren&#8217;t we taught this as an ideal? And fame?\u00a0<em>We can&#8217;t seem to resist celebrities<\/em>&#8211;and even create religious ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Many billionaires are idolized as visionary leaders who reshape society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Wealth accumulation is frequently a badge of success and identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">This is idolatry and more in the camp of Caesar than Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Contrast that to how Jesus rejected the idea that earthly power or wealth defined greatness: In His view, the &#8220;world&#8221; values things that ultimately blind people to God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Call it greed versus the Creed. Call it &#8220;Accumulation&#8221; versus &#8220;Detachment.&#8221; Selfish versus selfless. Be careful! Can a rich person be holy? Absolutely. But it is a challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Like it or not, Jesus warned repeatedly<\/span> against the dangers of wealth. \u201cWhat does it profit a man to gain the whole world, but lose his soul?\u201d (<em>Mark<\/em> 8:36). \u201cIt is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.\u201d (<em>Matthew<\/em> 19:24)<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">=<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"a3s aiL \">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Billionaire culture:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">That revolves around accumulating assets, &#8220;growing&#8221; companies, expanding portfolios, and gaining influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">It often emphasizes technological control, longevity, and legacy projects (like space travel or AI immortality).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Where billionaires often seek to control or extend life, Jesus calls His followers to lose their life for His sake (<em>Matthew<\/em> 10:39), trusting in God&#8217;s Kingdom over human achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Jesus critiqued the illusion that wealth brings security. \u201cDo not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth&#8230; but lay up treasures in heaven.\u201d (<em>Matthew<\/em> 6:19\u201320). Yet our modern culture does what?
