{"id":76763,"date":"2025-08-07T08:58:33","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T12:58:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/?p=76763"},"modified":"2025-08-27T20:28:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T00:28:08","slug":"two-aspects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/two-aspects\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Aspects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rome was an interesting scene this week.<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand, there was a Gallup Survey showing that the most popular person in the news&#8211;secular news&#8211;is none other than Pope Leo XIV. Among fourteen prominent U.S. and global figures, Pope Leo XIV has the most positive image by far, with many more Americans viewing him favorably than unfavorably.<\/p>\n<p>His 57 percent favorable rating and 11 percent unfavorable rating result in a +46 net-favorable score, far ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (+18).<\/p>\n<p>The Pope met with a <em>million<\/em> young people last weekend, more than double the 400,000 to 500,000 <em>[below]<\/em> at Woodstock.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bethelwoodscenter.org\/assets\/img\/Woodstock-History-f9e5c95800.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>How&#8217;s that for public engagement?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">On the other hand,<\/span> there was news of the August 5 celebration at the Basilica of Mary Major in Rome (Francis&#8217;s favorite), where white rose petals were released in celebration of the fourth-century miracle of the Virgin of Snows, while in Naples, 145 miles from Rome, was what might be called a &#8220;multiplication of oil&#8221; took place.<\/p>\n<p>A miracle.<\/p>\n<p>There, a priest dabbing more than five hundred with Saint Charbel oil and on the verge of running out not only had enough for a special Mass celebrating the great wonderworker but when he went to put the jar of oil back in a safe found that it was virtually full again.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">These are the two sides<\/span> of the Roman Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<p>One is the mundane, even worldly, side, centered on the theological, institutional, and <em>institutional<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/image.nj.com\/home\/njo-media\/width960\/img\/njcom_photos\/photo\/2015\/08\/25\/-90a7311dd1f66333.JPG\" alt=\"Rock star' Pope Francis finds U.S. Catholic Church at a crossroads - nj.com\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other is the\u00a0<em>mystical<\/em> aspect, less obvious and often downplayed, involving the devotional, intuitional, and sometimes miraculous.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cathstan.org\/voices\/padre-pio-is-beloved-but-most-people-misunderstand-why\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cathstan-1f209.kxcdn.com\/0923padrepio.jpg?width=2400&amp;height=1350&amp;crop=fp,0.5,0.5\" alt=\"Padre Pio is beloved but most people misunderstand why- Catholic Standard\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the supernatural side of the Church is on the rise\u2014largely due to apparitions of the Virgin Mary and newfound societal popularity of spiritual warfare (e.g. all the now-public exorcists), the worldly side remains the face of Catholicism, whether in parish offices, the local chancery, or at the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">That side of the Church<\/span> has the delicate task of interacting with the world while trying not to be a part of it.<\/p>\n<p>And a tightrope this often is, particularly for our Popes, who are expected to meet with the dignitaries, moguls, the superwealthy, and sometimes the notorious of society.<\/p>\n<p>Every Pontiff has been pictured with celebrities, many of whom have a dark side of which the Vatican is not aware.
