In fact, by the early 1900s, it was one of the most productive agricultural areas in the United States.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"801\" data-end=\"858\">\ud83d\udca1 <strong data-start=\"808\" data-end=\"858\">Seeds of Innovation: The Transformation Begins<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"860\" data-end=\"1334\">The shift from fruit to firmware began <strong data-start=\"899\" data-end=\"922\">around World War II<\/strong>, when <strong data-start=\"929\" data-end=\"952\">Stanford University<\/strong> played a pivotal role in attracting defense and electronics contracts. In particular, <strong data-start=\"1039\" data-end=\"1078\">Stanford\u2019s provost Frederick Terman<\/strong> encouraged faculty and graduates to start tech companies locally instead of moving east. Hoefler<\/strong> in a series of articles in <em data-start=\"1700\" data-end=\"1717\">Electronic News<\/em> in 1971 titled \u201c<strong data-start=\"1734\" data-end=\"1757\">Silicon Valley, USA<\/strong>.\u201d The name referred to the growing cluster of companies developing <strong data-start=\"1825\" data-end=\"1843\">semiconductors<\/strong>, particularly using silicon as a base material.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1893\" data-end=\"2260\">The rise of the <strong data-start=\"1909\" data-end=\"1935\">semiconductor industry<\/strong> had already begun in the 1950s, especially with the arrival of <strong data-start=\"1999\" data-end=\"2026\">Fairchild Semiconductor<\/strong>, founded in 1957 by the \u201c<strong data-start=\"2052\" data-end=\"2072\">Traitorous Eight<\/strong>\u201d who left William Shockley\u2019s lab.
