{"id":8138,"date":"2017-06-07T00:17:40","date_gmt":"2017-06-07T00:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/?p=8138"},"modified":"2017-06-07T17:15:09","modified_gmt":"2017-06-07T17:15:09","slug":"the-pope-and-the-devil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/the-pope-and-the-devil\/","title":{"rendered":"The Pope And The Devil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7508 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/logoinside.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"45\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/irishcatholic.ie\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/article_details\/public\/main\/articles\/Pope%20Francis%20serious.jpg?itok=S7uv3WWp\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"300\" \/><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Recently, much has been made, including on this news site, of the Superior General for the Jesuits and a remark he made to the effect that the devil is merely symbolic.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cWe have formed symbolic figures such as the devil to express evil,&#8221; Father Arturo Sosa told <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/papel\/lideres\/2017\/05\/31\/592d806d268e3e1a7c8b476c.html\"><em>El Mundo<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;Social conditioning can also represent this figure,\u00a0since there are people who act [in an evil way] because they are in an environment where it is difficult to act to the contrary.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>It was a bit startling at the same time, somehow, as it was not surprising: Jesuits are famous for their modernism &#8212; that is, Northern Hemisphere Jesuits.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/8\/8c\/Fordham_University_Keating_Hall_cropped.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for keating hall\" width=\"218\" height=\"138\" \/>I recall attending the wedding in the mid-1980s of a close friend from the\u00a0Washington<em> Post<\/em>\u00a0who had attended Fordham University&#8217;s School of Journalism with me back then and how a Jesuit professor we both had, a priest who also wrote for and edited magazines such as <em>Commonweal<\/em> and\u00a0<em>America<\/em>, and was seated at my table, replied in the negative when (as a recent returnee to the Church) I asked if he believed in saints and the existence of Satan. &#8220;Of course not,&#8221; he said, or something to that effect, and when I remarked that I did believe in such, barked, &#8220;I know\u00a0<em>you<\/em> do,&#8221; in a tone that was unmistakably condescending.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>I can imagine a good number of Jesuits who do not believe in the devil&#8217;s existence but it is startling to hear to superior general admit as much, because the most famous Jesuit in the world <em>does<\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">He is now called Pope Francis,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and he has mentioned the devil as much as or more than any Pope in the past one hundred years.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In his very first homily as Supreme Pontiff, on March 14, the day after he was elected, Francis warned cardinals gathered in the Sistine Chapel that &#8220;he who doesn&#8217;t pray to the Lord prays to the devil.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>The mentions have continued unabated.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">October 11, 2013:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThere are some priests who, when they read this Gospel passage, this and others, say: \u2018But, Jesus healed a person with a mental illness.&#8217; They do not read thus, no? It is true that at that time, they could confuse epilepsy with demonic possession; but it is also true that there was the devil.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-op-caption field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/eJnYmGV6N1o\/maxresdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for pope exorcism\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">April 22, 2017<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(reference to persecuted Christians): \u201cWith his death and resurrection, [Jesus] rescued us from the power of this world, the power of the devil, and the prince of the world doesn\u2019t want this.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-op-caption field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-op-caption field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">December 22, 2016<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> (referring to resistance to reform of the Curia): \u201cThere are also cases of malicious resistance, which spring up in misguided minds and come to the fore when the devil inspires ill intentions (often cloaked in sheep\u2019s clothing).\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">February 10, 2017<\/span>:\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019s a trickster. He promises you everything and leaves you naked (like he left Adam and Eve)&#8230; The serpent, the devil, is astute&#8230; you cannot dialogue with the devil.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">January 19, 2017 (on Jesus): \u201cThe unclean spirits try to stop him, they wage war.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">April 10, 2017:<\/span> \u201cThe serpent is the symbol of wickedness, is the symbol of the devil: it was the most cunning of the animals in earthly paradise&#8230; the serpent is the one that is able to seduce with lies&#8230; the father of lies: this is the mystery.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">November 17, 2016<\/span>: \u201cCorruption is to become a follower of the devil, the father of lies.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">September 12, 2016:<\/span> The devil engages in a \u201cdirty war\u201d by sowing divisions, the Pope said, \u201clike terrorism.\u201d In this way, he spreads \u201cjealousies, ambitions, ideas, but to divide!\u201d he said.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">January 23, 2013: \u201cBehind every rumor there is jealousy and envy. And gossip divides the community, destroys the community. Rumors are the weapons of the devil.\u201d<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>The list goes on.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Back to October 11, 2013:\u00a0\u201cAnd we do not have the right to simplify the matter, as if to say: \u2018All of these [people] were not possessed; they were mentally ill.\u2019 No! The presence of the Devil is on the first page of the Bible, and the Bible ends as well with the presence of the Devil, with the victory of God over the Devil.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>\u201cToday&#8217;s Gospel begins with the devil being cast out and ends with the devil coming back. St. Peter said, \u2018It&#8217;s like a fierce lion that circles us.\u2019 It is like that.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cSome may say,<\/span> but, Father, you&#8217;re too old fashioned. You&#8217;re frightening us with these things.\u2019 No, it&#8217;s not me! It is the Gospel! And these are not lies: it is the Word of the Lord. Let us ask the Lord for the grace to take these things seriously. He came to fight for our salvation. He won against the devil. Please, let&#8217;s not do business with the devil. He wants to come back home, to take possession \u2026 Don&#8217;t accept relativism, be vigilant. And always with Jesus!\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Pope Francis, liberal?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Not when it comes to the devil.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Michael H.
