Pope Leo XIV said Tuesday that U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s threat to\u00a0destroy Iranian civilization<\/a><\/span> was \u201ctruly unacceptable\u201d and said any attacks on civilian infrastructure violate international law.\u00a0In some of his strongest comments yet against the war, the American pope urged Americans and other people of good will to contact their political leaders and congressional representatives to demand they reject war and work for peace.\u00a0\u201cToday as we all know there was this threat against all the people of Iran. This is truly unacceptable,\u201d Leo said as he left his country house in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome.<\/p>\n

Leo recalled his Easter appeal for peace and to reject war, \u201cespecially a war which many people have said is an unjust war, which is continuing to escalate, and which is not resolving anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pope Leo has labeled\u00a0Donald Trump\u2019s latest threats against Iran<\/a> “unacceptable” in an unusual appeal hours after the U.S. president said “a whole civilization will die tonight.\u201d\u00a0Leo, an\u00a0outspoken critic<\/a>\u00a0of the Iran war, called on citizens across the world to contact their political representatives and urge them to bring\u00a0the expanding conflict<\/a>\u00a0to an end.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, as we all know, there was this threat against all the people of Iran. This is truly unacceptable,\u201d the pope said Tuesday. “There are certainly issues here of international law, but even more than that, it is a moral question for the good of the (world’s) people.\u201d<\/p>\n
