This year, on Easter, he\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/messages\/urbi\/documents\/20260405-urbi-et-orbi-pasqua.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>, \u201cLet those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace!\u201d On Friday, he posted a\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Pontifex\/status\/2042588417578668338\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">message<\/a>\u00a0that anyone who is a disciple of Jesus Christ \u201cis never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">By Sunday, President Trump apparently had heard enough. Mr. Trump said Leo was elected only \u201cbecause he was an American, and they thought that would be the best way to deal with President Donald J. Trump.\u201d Nearly a year ago, right after Leo was elected, seven cardinals \u2014 six Americans and Cardinal Christophe Pierre, then the Vatican\u2019s apostolic nuncio, or ambassador, to the United States \u2014 were\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/news\/2025\/unity-not-nationality-led-pope-leos-election-us-cardinals-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">asked<\/a>\u00a0if he had been selected to serve as \u201ca counterweight\u201d to Mr. Trump.
