The date marks the day in 1876, when the cornerstone for a shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Pompeii was laid.\u00a0The sanctuary is located near the excavations of\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/italy-pompeii-artificial-intelligence-reconstruction-victims-vesuvius-2b1b4c944f4285a10699b3f3053fe8a6\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">the city that was buried in A.D. 79,<\/a><\/span>\u00a0when Mount Vesuvius erupted and spewed volcanic ash and gas across the region.
