Mayon is famous for its near-perfect cone shape and its long history of eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, and lahars. The current Mayon eruption began in January 2026, with PHIVOLCS raising the volcano to Alert Level 3 as lava, rockfalls, volcanic earthquakes, and pyroclastic flows continued. NASA notes that Mayon has erupted many times through recorded and geologic history, including deadly eruptions in 1814, 1897, and 1993.
