{"id":83404,"date":"2026-06-06T09:07:49","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T13:07:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/?p=83404"},"modified":"2026-06-06T09:07:49","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T13:07:49","slug":"a-i-did-pope-go-far-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritdaily.org\/blog\/a-i-did-pope-go-far-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"A.I.: Did Pope Go Far Enough?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>From The New York Times:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2026\/06\/06\/multimedia\/06douthat-bmkg\/06douthat-bmkg-articleLarge.jpg?quality=75&amp;auto=webp&amp;disable=upscale\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Of all the reactions to Pope Leo\u2019s manifesto on artificial intelligence, from its liberal humanist appreciators to its digital-consciousness-believing critics, one of the most notable is the disappointment of the A.I. skeptics who think the pope didn\u2019t go nearly far enough.\u00a0Writing in Compact magazine, Princeton\u2019s Greg Conti\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.compactmag.com\/article\/what-pope-leo-should-have-said-about-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">responds<\/a>\u00a0to the pope\u2019s description of the perils of the age of artificial intelligence by asking, \u201cMust we have such an age declared already?\u201d Could a pope not, instead, call for \u201can age of\u00a0<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">resistance\u00a0<\/em>to A.I.?\u201d In The Hedgehog Review, the cultural critic Anton Barba-Kay\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/hedgehogreview.com\/web-features\/thr\/posts\/should-the-lion-lie-down-with-the-electric-lamb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">comments<\/a>\u00a0that approaching A.I. as a \u201cvaluable tool that requires vigilance,\u201d in Leo\u2019s words, is like saying that \u201ccocaine can be a valuable drug that should be snorted with a pinch of salt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/27\/opinion\/pope-leo-ai-encyclical.html\">My own reaction<\/a>\u00a0to the papal intervention had something in common with these critics.
