Someone attempted to set fire to the altar of the parish church of San Fereolo on Tuesday morning. The alarm was raised in the afternoon, around 4:30 PM, by parish priest Don Elia Croce, who found ash on the floor and noticed that the two altar cloths had burned corners. “Furthermore,” explains the priest who has led the parish for over ten years, “something sticky remained on the marble, I don’t know if it was the residue of a material that may have been spilled to light the flames or, due to the heat, the residue of the starch used to iron the tablecloths. I believe that fortunately the fire went out on its own. There was no serious damage. But it was a terrible act.” This is not the first fire in a church in Lodi. In January 2023, a missal was set on fire in Santa Cabrini, on Via Lodivecchio, and the flames also spread to the vestments in the entrance. At that time, the police reported a 40-year-old man. More recently, statues in the church in Borgo had been damaged, and several votive shrines in the city had been stoned.
