I am writing from northern Italy. But devils are behind ALL such phenomenon all around the world and in many many guises. I grew up in the southern USA and had experience of similar sorts of strange things through the Indian culture (Pueblo/Navajo)–experience of their ‘sacred places’ which did indeed have strange things going on–enough to raise the hair on your head. Nevertheless, one Ave Maria was enough to annihilate the creepiness–or simply singing a Christmas carol would do it (‘Away in a Manger’ was very effective). At least momentarily. But those areas have to be deeply purified in order to uproot and dislodge the evil that has been for centuries practiced there. To purify an area, it is the same process as clearing a wild or un-kempt field for planting; afterwards the field must be continuously looked-after and ‘guarded’ — because, as the parable of the wheat and tares suggests, the evil one comes and sows his seeds in the night when we sleep. The work of looking after fields continues season after season. And for which reason the Church saw from the beginning that it was urgently necessary to establish a sacramental practice that would aid the pagans converting to Christianity to remove–purify–also their lands (and cities and towns) from the power of demons (“the gods”). So that’s how the Rogation days came about. Here it is explained very succinctly by AI (with some corrections by me): “Rogation days [Ember days] (from the Latin ‘rogare’, meaning “to supplicate”) are ancient prayers and processions instituted to invoke divine protection for the crops [and protection from the destructive forces of “mother nature”]. The Catholic Church historically scheduled them for April 25 (Major Rogation) to Christianize the ancient Roman pagan festival of Robigalia, which was celebrated to ward off wheat rust (associated with the god Robigus)”. Rogation processions were held also in the period leading up to Pentecost, and again during the Ember days of September. Processions then throughout the summer months (for Corpus Domini, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the Assumption, or local Saints) would go (still to this day they are widely practiced!) out into the country from the churches of the little towns, and fields would be blessed along the way. Crosses, Crucifixes, statues of Our Lady and the saints would be erected along roads and at cross-roads and placed in the middle of fields, vineyards, on tops of mountains and even in the sea. In the Venice lagoon I have seen these shrines, also in other parts of the Italian coast of the north Adriatic Sea there are little shrines in the middle of the waters–and even under the water–serving as divine protection over fishing sites, and clam and mussel beds. Every year a solemn procession of boats goes out into these areas and the Priest blesses the waters as he would the fields. He blesses also these devotional shrines, and they are decorated with wreathes. The town where I live is situated on a river that has twice in the past 60 years flowed over the banks flooding the town. Finally, about 15 years ago, the resident Priest overcame the terrible modernist virus that makes Catholics ashamed of their vast power over evil and demons and climate change: on the feast day of the Patron Saint of the town he went somewhat sheepishly to the river and blessed it. And now he does it every year (and not sheepishly anymore) and at least twice since then there were two occasions when the ‘scientists’ were ready to bet their life that the river would break the banks. Needless to say it didn’t.

Forgive me for going on so long here!
