According to the latest bulletin from the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the European agency dedicated to climate monitoring, the month saw record temperatures across much of Western Europe and was, globally, the second-hottest June on record, just behind 2024. Last month’s extreme heat came just weeks after another major heatwave recorded in May, confirming a trend scientists now call structural: increasingly frequent and intense heat events not only in Europe, but across multiple regions of the planet, from North Africa to North America.

Samantha Burgess, climate strategy officer at ECMWF (the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts), emphasized that June data show a climate system that continues to accumulate heat, with direct consequences for the intensity of heatwaves, persistent ocean warming, and growing risks to populations, ecosystems, and infrastructure. Behind the climate statistics lies a parallel, dramatic toll. According to an analysis by Politico, the Virginia-based US newspaper, based on preliminary official mortality data and estimates developed by researchers in the six most affected countries, the extreme heat wave has caused at least 14,000 excess deaths compared to average. A second report published by EuroMomo, the mortality monitoring service supported by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the World Health Organization, found 10,650 excess deaths in its 27 member countries between June 22 and 28. These are preliminary figures and are potentially subject to change as new data arrive.

Across the continent, France and the United Kingdom experienced their hottest June on record, while the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands recorded their second-hottest June on record, with all-time highs in several locations. Across the continent, Europe recorded its second-highest average temperature ever for the month, at 19.14°C. The heatwave also affected North Africa. Morocco’s General Meteorological Directorate has issued an orange alert for a new heatwave expected in the coming days, until Friday, with temperatures expected to reach 45°C in the southern provinces bordering the Sahara, while in the central and southern parts of the country, from Taroudant to Marrakech to Casablanca, temperatures are expected to range between 40 and 43°C. The United States is also facing a summer marked by extreme temperatures. The National Weather Service predicts that more than 90 temperature records will be set or broken across the country this week, most of which will involve overnight lows. Cities historically known for winter cold, such as Fargo, North Dakota, International Falls, Minnesota, and Portland, Maine, are experiencing unusually high temperatures.

Sea ice was also affected by the abnormal warmth. In the Arctic, the monthly mean extent was 5% (0.6 million km²) below average, the sixth lowest on record for June, with particularly sharp declines in the northern Barents Sea, around Svalbard, and Franz Josef Land. In Antarctica, the situation was even more severe, with an extent 8% (1.1 million km²) below average, also the sixth lowest on record for the month, with particularly sharp declines in the Bellingshausen Sea. Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, called the phenomenon “a true public health emergency.” On July 6, Kluge convened an extraordinary summit with 130 representatives from 41 Member States, the European Commission, and civil society to review lessons learned from the last wave and assess preparedness for the next one. “Such broad participation is a sign that countries are taking heat seriously as a health issue,” he emphasized. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the 2026 Climate and Forecast Conventions Community Workshop in Bonn, which will take place from September 21st to 24th. This scientific and technical event is designed to bring together researchers, developers, and data specialists working on climate and forecast metadata management. The event represents an opportunity for discussion for the entire international community working on reference standards for describing environmental and climate data. The four-day event is hosted by three leading organizations in the climate data landscape: the CF Conventions Community, the Copernicus Climate Change Service, and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
