There are abandoned places.<\/p>\n

And then there are places that are devoid of people but don’t quite feel abandoned.<\/p>\n

The people leave. The buildings decay. Weeds climb through the windows. Metal rusts. Trees reclaim what man once cleared.<\/p>\n

But something\u2014or the memory of something\u2014appears to remain, embedded by the twist of fate.<\/p>\n

Such is the unsettling reputation of Lake Shawnee Amusement Park, hidden among the wooded hills of Mercer County, West Virginia, near the tiny community of Rock.<\/p>\n

Once, children laughed here.\u00a0Music played. Swings circled through the warm Appalachian air. Families cooled themselves in the swimming pool. A Ferris wheel lifted riders above the lake and surrounding countryside.<\/p>\n

Today?<\/p>\n

The wheel is motionless amid vines and bare branches.<\/p>\n

The swing ride resembles a giant metal skeleton.<\/p>\n

The pool is empty.<\/p>\n

And visitors claim that the children may not all have left.<\/p>\n

Lake Shawnee Amusement Park opened in 1926 and operated for roughly forty years, according to the property\u2019s official website. Its surviving attractions remain on private land, where daytime historical tours and overnight paranormal investigations are now offered by appointment.<\/p>\n

But the story of the property began long before the first ticket was sold.<\/p>\n

Local history associates the land with the Clay family, among the earliest European settlers in the region. In the late eighteenth century, several Clay children were killed during a violent confrontation involving Native Americans. Retaliatory bloodshed followed.<\/p>\n

Thus, decades before the carousel turned, the ground had already absorbed grief, rage, and violent death.<\/p>\n

Later archaeological discoveries reportedly indicated that Native Americans had lived\u2014and buried their dead\u2014in the area long before European settlement. Mercer County tourism officials describe the property as having a history stretching back more than a thousand years and acknowledge the presence of ancient burial grounds.<\/p>\n

These, we have found through the years, are often problematic, for pagan practices leave residue. (And ghost hunts are ill-advised<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

Was the history merely forgotten?<\/p>\n

Or was something disturbed?<\/p>\n

During the park\u2019s operating years, tragedy returned.<\/p>\n

The best-known incident involved a young girl who was riding the circular swings. According to accounts repeated by historians, tourism officials, and the property\u2019s caretakers, a delivery truck backed into the path of the moving ride.<\/p>\n

The child was struck and killed.<\/p>\n

Visitors now tell of seeing a little girl near it\u2014sometimes described in a pale or white dress. Others claim to have noticed one of the seats moving when the surrounding swings remained still.<\/p>\n

There was another tragedy.<\/p>\n

A young boy reportedly drowned in the park\u2019s swimming pool after his arm became caught in a drain or underwater pipe. The pool, now empty and cracked, is another area where visitors have reported unusual sensations, voices, or the impression that they are being watched.<\/p>\n

(When this happens, wherever we are, it is a call for prayer (and Holy Water).<\/p>\n

Stories circulate that several people died during the park\u2019s years of operation. Yet only the two childhood deaths are consistently described in detail. As so often happens with haunted locations, established facts are surrounded by additions that become more dramatic with each retelling.<\/p>\n

But two children are enough.<\/p>\n

Two young lives ending at a place created for happiness.<\/p>\n

Could grief imprint itself upon a place?<\/p>\n

Could the violent and unexpected death of a child leave what some call a spiritual residue? Or is it the buried Indians?<\/p>\n

Those are the questions raised at Lake Shawnee. People involved in those unwise paranormal investigations have reported electronic voice phenomena, unexplained shadows, cold areas, equipment malfunctions, and the sensation of unseen figures walking nearby. Television programs and ghost-hunting teams have visited.<\/p>\n

Yet cameras and instruments do not settle matters of the spirit.<\/p>\n

A sudden movement can be wind.<\/p>\n

A voice on a recorder can be interference.<\/p>\n

A shadow can be an animal, a branch, or imagination.<\/p>\n

But when unrelated visitors repeatedly report similar things in the same locations\u2014particularly the image or voice of a child\u2014one pauses.<\/p>\n

There is something symbolically powerful about an abandoned amusement park.<\/p>\n

A deserted house was built for ordinary life. An abandoned factory was built for work.<\/p>\n

But an amusement park was built specifically for joy.<\/p>\n

One can imagine arriving at dusk, with mist forming near the water and the last daylight fading behind the Appalachian hills.<\/p>\n

The park would not need a ghost to feel haunted.<\/p>\n

But does that explain everything?<\/p>\n

The word \u201ccurse\u201d is frequently attached to Lake Shawnee.<\/p>\n

It should be used carefully.<\/p>\n

From a Christian standpoint, land is not necessarily cursed simply because tragedy occurred upon it. Nor should every strange noise or emotional sensation be attributed to spirits.<\/p>\n

Yet Scripture and Christian tradition do recognize that human actions can have spiritual consequences.<\/p>\n

Places or homes where violence, hatred, occult activity, sacrilege, or intense suffering have occurred may carry a spiritual heaviness. Whether this results from demonic oppression, lingering human attachment, psychological suggestion\u2014or some combination\u2014is a matter requiring discernment.<\/p>\n

The Church warns against attempting to summon or interrogate the dead. Spirits can deceive. An entity that presents itself as innocent or sorrowful should not automatically be accepted as such.<\/p>\n

This is why ghost hunting can be a significant peril.<\/p>\n

Calling out to unseen presences, inviting them to speak, requesting manifestations, using spirit boards, or deliberately opening oneself to contact may create an invitation that is difficult to withdraw.<\/p>\n

Fascination with darkness can quietly become participation in it.<\/p>\n

The proper Christian response to Lake Shawnee is neither mockery nor thrill-seeking. It is prayer for the children who died there. It’s prayer for all who suffered upon that land. It’s prayer that whatever hatred, fear, or violence once occurred might be surrendered to Christ.<\/p>\n

If there are souls in need of prayer, God knows them.<\/p>\n

If there is deception, Christ exposes it.<\/p>\n

If there is darkness, the answer is not provocation but the Light.<\/p>\n
