Following the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Vatican_Council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span dir=\"auto\">Second Vatican Council<\/span><\/a><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0(1962\u20131965), Pope\u00a0<\/span><b><span dir=\"auto\">Paul VI<\/span><\/b><span dir=\"auto\">\u00a0issued the 1966 so-called motu proprio, a decree-like document, titled\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/paul-vi\/en\/motu_proprio\/documents\/hf_p-vi_motu-proprio_19660806_ecclesiae-sanctae.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span dir=\"auto\">Ecclesiae Sanctae<\/span><\/em><\/a><span dir=\"auto\"> (Holy Church). The document sets norms to limit that unbound tenure by requiring every bishop to offer his resignation upon reaching age 75, among other specific reforms that were later expanded by\u00a0<b>John Paul II<\/b>\u00a0&#8216;s 1983\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/cod-iuris-canonici\/cic_index_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Code of Canon Law<\/em><\/a>\u00a0.
