As we all know, a massive disaster struck northern and central Nepal on August 26, 2026<\/a><\/span>, when a high-altitude glacial collapse near the Nepal\u2013Tibet border sent a catastrophic flow of ice, rock, mud, and water nearly 100 kilometers down the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi river basins.<\/p>\n

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority , confirmed deaths in Nepal stand at 1,356, with nearly 5,000 people (4,994) remaining missing.<\/span> Over 40 deaths and hundreds missing have also been reported on the Chinese side of the border in Tibet. Rapidly retreating glaciers form dynamic ice-dammed and moraine-dammed lakes.<\/span> Southeastern Alaska (e.g., Suicide Basin near Juneau) experiences recurrent outburst flooding, impacting municipal infrastructure, airstrips, and homes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Could it happen elsewhere, particularly North America?<\/span><\/p>\n

Probably we know that also; the answer is “of course.”<\/p>\n

One place that comes immediately to mind is Mount Rainier in the state of Washington.<\/p>\n

If the catastrophic glacial collapse that struck Nepal’s Trishuli and Bhote Koshi river valleys were to happen on Mount Rainier, the physical phenomenon would translate into over <\/span>five times as much ice and snow as all other Cascade volcanoes combined<\/span> across twenty-five major glaciers.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Puget Sound lowlands, slurry would engulfs river towns like Orting, Sumner, Puyallup, and parts of Auburn and Kent under tens of feet of gray, suffocating mud and debris. The dense flow would easily snap bridge abutments, buries highways, and destroys structural foundations. According to U.S. Geological Survey estimates, over 90,000 residents live directly within Mount Rainier’s mapped lahar hazard zones, alongside roughly 50,000 workers and thousands of school children.<\/p>\n

With proper notification, mass pedestrian evacuations to high ground could save most of the population, keeping fatalities low. That’s a “prayer need” (and a big “if”).<\/p>\n

Unstable glacial lakes are swelling<\/span> as melting ice rapidly recedes, giving birth to volatile ice-dammed and moraine-bound basins that threaten sudden, devastating outburst floods.<\/p>\n

Downstream, coastal communities face a constant peril: in places like Suicide Basin near Juneau, torrents of water periodically burst forth without warning, ripping through municipal infrastructure, washing out airstrips, and encroaching on quiet residential homes.<\/p>\n

Farther south along the Pacific Cordillera in British Columbia, towering peaks and steep glacial valleys tell a similar story.<\/p>\n
