It's a\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If the catastrophic glacial collapse that struck Nepal&#8217;s Trishuli and Bhote Koshi river valleys were to happen on Mount Rainier, the physical phenomenon would translate into <span class=\"citation-6\">over <\/span><span class=\"citation-6\">five times as much ice and snow as all other Cascade volcanoes combined<\/span><span class=\"citation-6 citation-end-6\"> across twenty-five major glaciers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the Puget Sound lowlands, slurry would engulfs river towns like Orting, Sumner, Puyallup, and parts of Auburn and Kent under tens of feet of gray, suffocating mud and debris. The dense flow would easily snap bridge abutments, buries highways, and destroys structural foundations. According to U.S. Geological Survey estimates, over 90,000 residents live directly within Mount Rainier&#8217;s mapped lahar hazard zones, alongside roughly 50,000 workers and thousands of school children.<\/p>\n<p>With proper notification, mass pedestrian evacuations to high ground could save most of the population, keeping fatalities low. That&#8217;s a &#8220;prayer need&#8221; (and a big &#8220;if&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"0\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Unstable glacial lakes are swelling<\/span> as melting ice rapidly recedes, giving birth to volatile ice-dammed and moraine-bound basins that threaten sudden, devastating outburst floods.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"0\">Downstream, coastal communities face a constant peril: in places like Suicide Basin near Juneau, torrents of water periodically burst forth without warning, ripping through municipal infrastructure, washing out airstrips, and encroaching on quiet residential homes.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1\">Farther south along the Pacific Cordillera in British Columbia, towering peaks and steep glacial valleys tell a similar story.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1\"><button class=\"image-button ng-star-inserted\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"spark-licensed-landscape hero-image loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSJBl1E7oC2B-id_xaEqQoXZs-set_bdpkxURBcAP-MtWZ8-v6768DpzVc&amp;s=10\" alt=\"Glacial valley in British Columbia, AI generated\" width=\"718\" height=\"427\" \/><\/button><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1\">As permafrost deepens its thaw and unusual torrential rainstorms lash the high country, fragile, centuries-old moraines face structural collapse, sending massive cascades of rock, mud, and meltwater roaring into the valleys below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-path-to-node=\"1\">Places like the Himalayas in India and Pakistan and South American Andres likewise face enormous risks.
