Many of those balances came from breakfasts and lunches provided to children whose families were experiencing <a class=\"google-anno\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodnewsinstead.com\/culture\/kansas-inmates-raise-dollar4000-to-erase-students-lunch-debt?e=6508b695e8179a307e4a5bc1&amp;lctg=6508b695e8179a307e4a5bc1#\" data-google-vignette=\"false\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">\u00a0<span class=\"google-anno-t\">food<\/span><\/a> insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>Working with the nonprofit Reaching Out from Within, residents organized a fundraiser to reduce the district\u2019s outstanding debt. The organization, which serves correctional facilities in Kansas, North Carolina, and Missouri, was founded in 1982 on the belief that incarcerated people remain valuable members of their communities.\u00a0Residents contributed $3,810 from their own personal funds.
