Democrats decisively recaptured majorities in the House and Senate in the midterm elections<\/a>, riding a blue wave that exceeded expectations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But with Tuesday turning into Wednesday and a handful of high-profile races still to be called, the big question remaining is whether the already formidable Democratic congressional majorities<\/a> keep growing.\u00a0In the battle for the Senate, Democrats stormed to the majority by flipping GOP-held seats in Maine, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina, while successfully defending open seats in Michigan and New Hampshire. Meanwhile, Senate races<\/a> for two GOP-held seats were still too close to call.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tuesday\u2019s midterm elections laid bare voters\u2019 deep frustrations over high prices, the Iran war and concerns over government corruption. Democrats routed their rivals across the map, flipping states that have voted Republican for decades and that Trump won by double digits just two years ago.\u00a0That includes James Talarico\u2019s<\/a><\/span> stunning Senate victory in Texas, where no Democrat had won statewide office in more than 30 years, and Annie Andrews\u2019<\/a><\/span> upset victory over Sen. Darline Graham in South Carolina. Trump had thrown his full weight behind both losing candidates.\u00a0In Michigan, progressive Abdul El-Sayed \u2014 one of a crop of left-wing candidates who prevailed in Democratic primaries \u2014 topped Republican Mike Rogers. Democrats won control of the Senate and the House as voters delivered a blistering rebuke to President Trump in a midterm rout that reset the balance of power in Washington. The romp stretched from coast to coast and into the early hours of Wednesday, with Democrats flipping seats that had spent decades in Republican hands and taking House districts that had long seemed inaccessible.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump told The New York Times in an interview<\/a> that he was \u201cabsolutely willing to accept those results\u201d and was prepared to work with Democrats. Voters swept out Republican candidates who tethered themselves to Mr. Trump and those who sought a modicum of independence from him. Democrats flipped Senate seats in Maine<\/a>, Iowa<\/a>, Kansas<\/a>, Ohio<\/a>, North Carolina<\/a>, South Carolina<\/a> and even Texas<\/a>, according to The Associated Press. The outcome of the midterm elections is the first national mandate on Mr. Trump\u2019s second term.
