Padre Pio\u2019s Masses have become legendary. They would last for hours, and would overwhelm the congregation.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Padre Pio celebrated Mass, were his thoughts with the Sacrifice or were they with the Feast? He never spoke much about his experiences on the Altar, yet some very persistent people succeeded in dragging some words out of his mouth, which I will now report. On the whole they form a theology of the Mass worth learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, what is your Mass?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA sacred mixture with Jesus\u2019 Passion. My responsibility is unique in the world.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhat lesson must I learn and understand from your Holy Mass?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat I suffer all the sufferings endured by Jesus during His own Passion; that is for as much as it is possible for a human being to suffer.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, do you agonize as did Jesus in the garden of olives?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDefinitely!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cDoes the angel come to you as well, to comfort you?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhich FIAT do you pronounce?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo suffer for my co-exiled brothers and for the advent of His kingdom.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cDid you also say, \u2018They will shout \u2018crucify Him!, crucify Him!\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and who will be doing the shouting?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe children of mankind, especially those who have been benefited.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, how was Jesus\u2019 body left after the flogging?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Image\u201cAs the prophet says, \u2018He became one complete wound, He became a leper\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAnd so, are you also a complete sore, from your head to your toes?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd is not this our glory? Should there be no more space to include new wounds on my body, I will put new sores on top of the old ones.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, when you are being flogged, are you alone or is there someone to assist you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Blessed Virgin assists me, in the presence of the entire Paradise.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, Jesus gave me to understand that you suffer even the crowning\u00a0of thorns, otherwise the immolation would not be complete. Are the thorns placed just on your forehead or are they place around your whole head?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAround my entire body.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, do sinners pull your hair as they did Jesus\u2019?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot only do they pull my hair, they pull my bones as well.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, how much do you suffer during the celebration of the Holy<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mass?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDo not be concerned about this since, during my Masses, my sufferings undergo a crescendo, until the end of the Mass.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, within the celebration of the Divine Sacrifice, do you take<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 upon yourself our iniquities?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt cannot be done in any other way, since it is part of the Divine Sacrifice, hence the sentence of the sinner falls upon me.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, I saw you trembling as you were ascending the steps to the Altar. Why? Was it for what you were about to suffer?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot for what I was about to suffer, but for what I was about to OFFER.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, why do you cry when you read the Gospel at the Mass?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you think it a small thing that a God, conversing with His creatures is contradicted by them and, worse, He is continuously wounded by their ingratitude and cruelty?\u2019<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, why do you cry at the Offertory?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Image\u201cI see that you would like to seize my secret, and so be it. The Offertory is the moment in which the soul gets separated from the profane. The soul separated from the profane, enters into the sacred realm.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, would you please tell me, why do you suffer so much at the Consecration?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause it is at this very moment that a new marvelous destruction and reconstruction occurs. The world and the whole of humanity are destroyed and reconstructed at Mass. At every Mass.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, how do you support yourself on the Altar?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe same way Jesus did on the Cross.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cFather, did the slaughterers turn Jesus\u2019 cross upside down in order to rivet the nails?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes, but don\u2019t let this alarm you.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, Does the Blessed Virgin assist your Mass?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you think that the Virgin would not interested in Her Son?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAnd do the angels also assist?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn myriads.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cDo you experience Jesus\u2019 thirst and abandonment?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cDid the crucified Jesus have His viscera worn-out?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cYou mean to say \u2018burnt out\u2019 don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhat did the Virgin do at the foot of the Cross?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe suffered in Her Son\u2019s sufferings. She offered all Her pains and those of Her Son to the celestial Father for the salvation of humanity.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, how must we attend the Holy Mass?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe same way the Virgin and the pious women did. The way St. John assisted at the Eucharist and at the Sacrifice of the Cross.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, what benefits do we gain by attending the Holy Mass?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey cannot be counted. You shall see them in Heaven.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, what is the Holy Communion?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is\u00a0complete Mercy, both internal and external;it is total encirclement. Pray that Jesus will allow you to physically, as well as spiritually, experience His presence.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAfter the Communion do sufferings continue?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sufferings of love.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, at the Holy Mass do you too die?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI die mystically, In the Holy Communion.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cIs it for vehemence of love or sorrow that you suffer death?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cOn whom did the dying Jesus place His last look?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOn His mother.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAnd you, where do you place it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOn my co-exiled brothers.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cFather, you said that at Communion the victim dies. Do they place you in the arms of Our Lady?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, they place me in the arms of St. Francis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Moving epilogue<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, since I read these confession, snatched from the Father of the Gargano (San Giovanni Rotondo), I have tried to participate at Mass in this light.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even at the new Mass, at the prosaic Mass and even amongst guitars etc\u2026\u00a0 I am sure that this takes place.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In a certain way I feel closer to the hidden Jesus who, in His lateral Tabernacle, is humiliated and put aside by so called well-intentioned people.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in spite of it all, He continues to descent from Heaven and come to us.<\/span><\/p>\n
