The Chastisement of the 'reprobate mind'

While we wait for a major event or series of them in response to societal evil -- a "chastisement" -- it is already occurring around us.

For as the Bible says, the punishment for transgression is subjection to a "reprobate mind."

We are engulfed by the reprobate, a word the dictionary defines as: unprincipled, bad, roguish, wicked, rakish, shameless, immoral, degenerate, debauched, and depraved.

That neatly sums up the current chastisement: our society has all but collapsed into debauchery. The mindset of our culture is a "reprobate" one. Romans 1:28: "And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient." Another translation of this passage says, "Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, He abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done."

And so we see how while we think God is going to come and put everything in order -- before it all falls into chaos -- subjection to evil, and a stripping away of morality, is itself part of a purification.

The curtain is parting slowly, in the woes of this. Everyone dances around it -- discusses it in the framework of sociology and politics when there is a spiritual root.

The United States of America is hardly alone but is a stunning example of how a nation can turn from God, from what is good, from what is logical, natural, and succumb to disorder. There is a great assault of evil spirits. These spirits show themselves not only on television and at the movies and on the computer screen or at the Supreme Court -- in Washington --  but in our very communities and churches and homes, as demons now attack families with ferocity -- unprecedented in our time -- and not just through things such as "gay" marriage: they set husband against wife, friends against friends; there is a tremendous spirit of division that moves over a "united" country.

The issue of homosexual marriage is huge. It stands for much more than two gays marrying. It is a slap at traditional values, the Bible, and the order established by God. Because it bucks that order, it will never bring peace to those who engage in aberrant activity. The push for gay marriage is a desperate attempt by those who are disordered to feel ordered, to reconcile what the inner spirit knows is wrong; no amount of legalization will cure it; it is an attempt by the devil to reverse what was made good. It is evil as good and good as evil (Christians are now the bad guys, the "intolerant" ones).

Nothing that opposes nature can be legislated into normality.

Race versus race. Rich versus poor. Immigrant versus native. Muslims versus Christian. Believer versus non-believer. Disunity is part of a chastisement. So is chaos. Listen to our music: chaos, frenzy, confusion, first signs of the devil. There is great coming upheaval, and it is ironic in a nation whose founders had secular and even Masonic mindsets but also harbored great Christian values and frequently inserted the Name of God and Jesus into original founding documents -- documents that are now being "sanitized" of all such reference by institutions of government, education, and especially the systems of jurisprudence, which -- as in one definition of reprobate -- are now "renegade."

To read the founding documents not only for the United States but for its most famous institutions of "higher learning" such as Harvard, Yale, and Princeton -- schools founded as Christian ones -- is to be stunned at how quickly a country can descend. There is a "purge." Russia is now arguably as Christian as the U.S. -- in some ways, more so. Our values are those of Babylon.

And so a denouement approaches. Without a dramatic reversal, there will be a further descent. Is this to be feared? It is to be challenged. Defeat is not inevitable. It is not in the design of God.
