Did the third secret of Fatima pertain to a 1985 nuclear war?

A re-transcription of a largely unknown conversation that Fatima seer Lucia dos Santos had with a visiting cardinal in 1993 confirms a dramatic statement she made that a consecration of the world by John Paul II in 1984 prevented a nuclear war.
On October 11, 1993, Lucia, now a nun in Coimbra, Portugal, made the remarkable though all but unknown assertion that "the Consecration of 1984 [during which Pope John Paul II consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart as requested at Fatima] prevented an atomic war that would have occurred in 1985 [our italics]."
The remarks, made to a contingent headed by Cardinal Ricardo Vidal of the Philippines, are now leading to speculation that such a war was what was indicated by the famous third secret -- which was revealed by the Vatican last June and which contained a vision of "an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire; but they died out in contact with the splendor that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand."
A nuclear warhead would come with flames flashing and an all-out war would indeed seem to "set the world on fire."
Moreover, the indicated time period -- 1984-1985 -- was when tensions were at a peak between Soviet hardliners such as Yuri Andropov and Konstantin Chernenko and the Reagan Administration -- which had beefed up the military, was ready to install a missile defense, and had described the Soviet Union as an "evil empire."
Rumors were rife at the time that the Soviets thought they could win a nuclear war.
It was also a period of time during which the Virgin was warning that peace was in a "state of crisis" or that the world was in danger of a nuclear war at apparition sites like Medjugorje in Bosnia-Hercegovina; San Nicolas in Argentina; and Cuapa in Nicaragua (the latter two approved by the Church). In the 1970s she had also warned of fire falling from the sky at a site of miracles in Akita, Japan.
Sister Lucia has not yet indicated that the secret refers specifically to a war in 1984, and thus has left open the possibility that it may have been meant as a general representation of modern danger. Says Carlos Evaristo, a Fatima historian at Fatima with close connections to Sister Lucia, "Based on Sister Lucia's interviews in conjunction with the Fatima message and the secret, you get a perfect image of what all of this really entails. It's an image that refers to the past, the present, and the future. In Sister Lucia's opinion and my opinion it doesn't hold itself to that particular event but can be used to interpret both that [1985] event, other past events, and other future events. Anybody will see that the third secret could not be anything else. It fits perfectly. It is a completion of LaSalette [where Mary appeared in 1846] and the visions of Don Bosco and Leo XIII."
Evaristo says that according to Sister Lucia, another Fatima message that had warned of the "annihilation of nations" pertained to the absorption of surrounding nations by Communist Russia. "It had annihilated cultures," he says. "Nations were culturally annihilated. Lucia told me it did not mean physical annihilation. It was the annihilation of nations as a people, as a race, as a culture."
