REVELATIONS IN FRANCE INDICATED CRUCIAL, MIRACULOUS DEVOTIONS FOR PROTECTION, REPAIR

Do devotions carry actual power?

As we all know, they certainly do -- and in the testimony of a French mystic named Sister Mary of St. Peter, none are more powerful than devotion to His Holy Face.

With this promises are obtained, she said. With this, we repair damage done by those who blaspheme, who curse, who fail to appreciate the Good God. With this, disasters in the world -- and our own lives -- can be averted.

It is critical at a time when we can be sure we face huge catastrophe if we don't develop a similar cause for our nations. Is the world better morally than France was in the 1840s when Sister Mary received these warnings?

The devotions can come through novenas. They can come through Eucharistic Adoration. They can come through dedicating Communion. They can come through spontaneous exultation. Finally, we have a formula to handle what looms before us. It can be simple. Praise You, Jesus. Praise Your Holy Face. Praise Your Holy Name. Holy is Sunday.

Think especially of His Face. It is the time of the year when we think of the Infant, Who of course put a Face on God. That Face matured into the visage we have seen in thousands of pictures. In older times, the Veil of Veronica was the best depiction of Christ. In our current era, it's the Shroud of Turin.

(Many believe that the Veronica veil, which only showed the Face, unlike the full-bodied Shroud, was in fact the Shroud folded and placed in a frame for a number of centuries).

According to Sister Mary, who died in 1848 -- leaving behind a record of powerful locutions that had her bishop's approval, and received an imprimatur -- devotions of reparation, novenas to the Holy Family and especially the honoring of Jesus' Face were the only way France avoided total destruction.

The same must be true in our own time.

Healings were reported with the novena and prayers of reparation she was inspired to record -- including of her Mother Superior, who had been skeptical of her revelations.

So too were disasters averted in France -- which outraged God with its blasphemies.

We can form our own way of reparation. We can devise our own means of praise. The important point is to praise and worship Him to make up for those who do the opposite -- and even defame Him.

"He made me see how the Devotion of Reparation surpassed other devotions, how pleasing it is to God, as also to the angels and saints, and how beneficial it is to the Church," she wrote in her autobiography. "Our Lord gave me a vision in which I saw a mysterious wall protecting our nation from the darts of Divine Justice. He told me that this wall which reached to Heaven was the special daily devotion which I offered for the needs of our nation, undoubtedly joined to the prayers and merits which many pious souls offered to God for the same intention. This devotion consists in reciting one hundred times each day a prayer wherein the Holy Face of Our Lord is offered to His Eternal Father in honor of all the Sacred Mysteries of the Savior's Life and Death."

The promises of these prayers were extraordinary. As the introduction to one of her revelations says, "Placing no bounds to the efficacy of the Devotion to the Holy Face, Our Savior informed Sister Mary that the treasure of His Face is of such tremendous value that through it, all matters can be settled!" We detail some of those prayers below.

Our Lord told Sister Mary that the image of His Holy Face is like a Divine stamp which -- if applied to souls, through prayer -- has the power of imprinting anew within them the Image of God.

"By virtue of this Holy Face, offered to the Eternal Father, we can appease His anger and obtain the conversion of the wicked and of blasphemies," added the sister, whose convent was in Tours, France -- several hundred miles south of the famed apparitions of the Blessed Mother at LaSalette, where there would soon be similar messages. "Our Lord said to me: 'Do not be astonished at these promises which I make in favor of those who devote themselves to repairing for blasphemies against God's Holy Name through the devotion to My Sacred Face because this Work of Reparation is the very essence of charity, and those who possess charity possess life."

The Lord promised Sister Mary that those who honor His Holy Face in a special fashion with a specific regimen of prayers "will work wonders, appease the anger of God, and draw down mercy on sinners.

"They will receive in their souls a bright and constant irradiation of My Divinity, that by their likeness to My Face they shall shine with particular splendor in Heaven.

"I will defend them, I will preserve them, and I assure them of Final Perseverance."

He said he will advocate those who honor His Face before the Throne of God; those who contemplate the wounds of His Face shall in Heaven behold it "radiant with glory." One man who took up the devotions -- an attorney named Leo Dupont, who was personally acquainted with Sister Mary, and spread devotion to His Face around the world -- kept a perpetual lamp burning before a replica of Veronica's Veil in a place of honor and veneration in the drawing room of his home and before long, notes the introduction to Sister Mary's autobiography (The Golden Arrow), "he was working miracles by applying the oil of this lamp to people's diseased or injured members. In time, his success and fame as a miracle-worker became so astounding that Pope Pius IX declared him to be perhaps the greatest wonder-worker in Church history." He was declared venerable -- and now awaits beatification.

Prayers soaked into that oil -- as prayers soak into all that is around us. Are we called to spread this same word? Are we called to promote prayer of reparation? Are we called -- as was Sister Mary -- to let all our bishops and priests know?

A key prayer: "Eternal Father, turn away Your angry gaze from our guilty people Whose Face has become unsightly in Your eyes. Look instead upon the Face of Your Beloved Son, for this is the Face of Him in Whom You are well-pleased. We now offer You this Holy Face, covered with shame and disfigured by bloody bruises in reparation for the crimes of our age in order to appease Your anger, justly provoked against us. Because Your Divine Son, our Redeemer, has taken upon His Head all the sins of His members, that they might be spared, we now beg of You, Eternal Father, to grant us mercy. Amen."

[Other prayers:

"Eternal Father, we offer You the Holy Face of Jesus, covered with blood, sweat, dust, and spittle, in reparation for the crimes of communists, blasphemers, and for the profaners of the Holy Name and of the Holy Day. Amen."

Also:

"I salute You, I adore You, and I love You, Oh, adorable Face of my beloved Jesus, as the noble stamp of the Divinity! Completely surrendering my soul to You, I most humbly beg You to stamp this seal upon us all, so that the Image of God may once more be reproduced by its imprint in our souls. Amen."

"May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most incomprehensible and unutterable Name of God be always praised, blessed, loved, adored, and glorified, in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the most holy sacrament of the altar. Amen."

And:

"Eternal Father, turn away Your angry gaze from our guilty people Whose Face has become unsightly in Your Eyes. Look instead upon the Face of Your Beloved Son, for this is the Face of Him in Whom You are well pleased. Amen."

And:

"Oh, Eternal Father, since it has pleased Our Divine Savior to reveal to mankind in our present century the power residing in His Holy Face, we now avail ourselves of this Treasure in our great needs. Since Our Savior Himself promised that by offering to You, Oh, Eternal Father, the Holy Face disfigured in the Passion, we can procure the settlement of all the affairs of our household, and that nothing whatsoever will be refused us, we now come before Your Throne.

"Offering to You, Oh, God, this adorable Countenance, disfigured with painful bruises and covered with shame and confusion, we beg through the merits of this Holy Face to obtain these, our most pressing needs.

"Grant us pardon, Eternal Father, for the worst crimes of our age, which are atheism, blasphemy, and the desecration of Your holy days.

"Avert from us destruction by war and its consequences which loom through the malice of revolutionary men who have risen up to stamp out religion from the face of the earth through false indoctrination, and who now stand ready to impose their wicked designs with militaristic force. May this offering of the Holy Face of Our Savior before Your Throne of Majesty obtain for us deliverance from these evils.

"Send us, Oh, God, zealous and enlightened laborers, by conferring many vocations to the priesthood and to religion, so that by their prayers, their works, and their sacrifices they may spread the blessings of Your Church and confound Your enemies. Amen."

Note also: "Our Lord inspired me at this time to compose certain prayers of reparation in the form of a chaplet, or a small Rosary," said Sister Mary. "This chaplet is made up of thirty-three small beads, on which is recited thirty-three times the prayer, 'Arise, Oh Lord, and let Your enemies be scattered, and let those that hate You flee before Your Face,' and also six large beads on which are recited the ejaculation, 'My Jesus, mercy,' followed by the doxology, 'Glory be to the Father, etc.'"
