SIGNS (AND CRIME) OF TIMES: GENE-ALTERED FOOD LINKED TO ALLERGIES AND PERHAPS A PROPHECY?
It is a crime of our time that scientists and corporations have been able to deluge us with untested and virtually unregulated synthetic materials and now we see the fruit (in diseases like cancer). A glance of the ingredients on many processed foods reads like a page from a chemistry textbook. It is now potentially much worse with the introduction -- into our food system -- of genetically-modified materials.
We don't know if they are harmful. No one has tested them. Probably they are: anything synthetic seems to have a big downside. While Europe bands genetically-modified food, we here in the U.S. have allowed it not only to be inserted into a wide variety of our foods, but without having to be noted on a label.
Soy. Corn. The list grows by the year. All of us ingest it.
Now comes a woman named Robyn O'Brien, a Texan who earned an MBA from Rice University on a full scholarship and graduated as the top woman in her class, then went to work in the investment world -- "jockeying with the gang on Wall Street, as an equity analyst where I covered the food industry and the tech industry" -- to blow the whistle on what she convincingly argues is a link between genetically-modified products and the epidemic of allergies that seems to be touching everyone (particularly our young).
According to O'Brien -- now an activist seen on network television -- there has been a 265 percent increase in hospitalizations for food allergies since the mid-1990s.
"When our first child was born," she says, "I traded my briefcase for a diaper bag and dove into motherhood. Like so many moms, I was busy, with limited time and limited resources, and a quick meal often included nuking chicken nuggets and serving up a bowl of mac and cheese. But then life changed one morning five years ago over a breakfast of blue yogurt and scrambled eggs. And I suddenly found myself knee-deep in alarming statistics and childhood epidemics like allergies, asthma, ADHD and autism. And as one of our four children had an allergic reaction, another one was getting sicker and sicker."
Around 1990, says Robyn, new proteins were engineered into our food supply to maximize profits.
"Beginning in 1994," she adds, "in order to drive up profitability for the dairy industry, scientists were able to create this new genetically-engineered protein and synthetic growth hormones for cows to help them produce more milk." There was a climate of deregulation.
As far as the engineered proteins and growth hormones, the problem: they caused mastitis, ovarian cysts, lameness, skin disorders, and other afflictions in the livestock. That should have been warning enough. Thus, more antibiotics had to be used -- antibiotics that we likewise consume (unknowingly).
While Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, and most of the rest of Western Europe disallowed this -- saying it hadn't been proven to be safe -- in the U.S. was the opposite tact: here it was argued that the chemical had not been proven dangerous (bequeathing to such substances the same right as humans: innocent until proven guilty and turning the general populace into what amounts to test subjects).
About those growth hormones in milk, meat, and other food: have you ever stopped to note how tall kids have sprouted since the 1990s? Does it seem normal? Will it have future repercussions? Too, have you ever noticed how many kids are suddenly allergic to things like peanuts?
O'Brien argues that the U.S. "has the highest level of cancer of anywhere on earth" and asserts that only ten percent of breast cancers are genetic -- the rest tied to other factors like the environment and what we eat.
In the late 1990s, corporations engineered corn so that it contains an insecticide -- and is even now regulated as one!
So, how does the U.S. export food products and produce to the rest of the world? O'Brien discovered that big food distribution companies like Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola and Kraft sell different formulations of their familiar products in foreign markets.
Perhaps this is the real health-care issue.
And it is somewhat galvanizing stuff for us on the prophetic beat, for it was in 1990 that an anonymous person received a prophecy we have often mentioned, one that claimed in four years a new and great evil would arrive to test mankind, something that would seem good and convenient for mankind but would be comparable to abortion.
Four years meant 1994 -- which turned out to be a watershed year for genetic research of all types, including funding and technological breakthroughs that have led to cloning and the used of embryonic stem cells: a new and great evil indeed [see here], along with, apparently, the altered proteins.
A follow-up prophecy (in 2004) warned that "The world is now seriously out of conformance with the Will of God and what He created and intended. There are those who would reconfigure the very creatures He has formed, and who meddle with the texture of life. For this reason, the Lord will allow a huge reorientation. If not for the action of Heaven, what God has created on earth will soon be damaged beyond recovery. A very dramatic effect already is in progress as regards the support structures of what man calls nature." Have we not seen disasters in the Midwest -- our food belt?
We have to be cautious about sweeping claims such as those from Robyn -- there are many things that cause allergies, and there is no scientific "proof" as yet -- but that we have dramatically altered God's Creation is indisputable.
And it gets more serious by the week.
Recent news: attempts to built lasers using human embryonic stem cells (that is, cells from aborted babies).
It turns out that research into food flavors is also using this research. There are vaccines derived from aborted cell lines. The cloning of stem cells from the aborted seems to derive from the actions around 1994 -- a new, great evil indeed. Where is the conscience of our country?
And last week, it was reported that a scientist named Craig Venter and his team "have built the genome of a bacterium from scratch and incorporated it into a cell to make what they call the world's first synthetic life form."
Julian Savulescu, professor of practical ethics at Oxford University, said: "Venter is creaking open the most profound door in humanity's history, potentially peeking into its destiny. He is not merely copying life artificially ... or modifying it radically by genetic engineering. He is going towards the role of a God: creating artificial life that could never have existed naturally."
