The other day, Charisma News had an article by a woman who wrote:
“My weight became a big issue in my life. I tried everything the world had to offer. Every magic trick and quick cure. Finally, I said, ‘I will never try the world’s way again. God, I need a word from You!'”
Now, here is where and how her spirit was touched.
“One day,” she writes, “I saw the words, ‘The devil wants you fat!’
“Those words pierced my heart. I wept. I repented and said, ‘God, I need Your help.’ As I meditated on His Word, He gave me a Divine strategy that took ninety pounds from my body. What was my real need? A word from God. I had to be convicted of my sin and repent. I had abused my body for so long, only a word from God could break the addiction. Repentance is the key to change. I’ve no doubt He was trying to speak to me many times before I surrendered to the Lord and was in the position to hear His voice.”
In The God of Healing is a similar account of losing nearly fifty pound by praying and letting the Holy Spirit infuse the mind and intuition with a similar tailored plan.
Since every human anatomy is unique, only the Holy Spirit fully understands what will take weight off us the best — and permanently.
Quick fixes are not worthwhile. They’re just that — quick in results and quick in those results vanishing, returning the person to where he or she was.
One must go to God and one must exercise discipline. God’s diet.
The Holy Spirit will cut to the chase and give you a few things to do — to stick to — that will have a remarkable, lasting effect.
But we have to go to Him and we have to listen and we have to exercise obedience and the discipline.
There are no free rides in life. We can try to find a magic bullet (so no work is necessary on our part: this fad diet or that fad diet), but God has designed the test of life such that we can never escape it without changing or correcting or purifying something within us in a direction that is positive.
Any addiction — to sugar, to fat, to white flour, to chocolate, or ice cream, or whatever — is an addiction, period. We want to be free, not in bondage to food. The truth sets us free.
Repentance? Yes. This means acknowledging a fault, a shortcoming. And it’s important — that level of honesty and humility.
Be honest about your weight. Weigh yourself each day.
Also, look inwardly: are there certain emotions you repeatedly suffer that cause you to run for “comfort food” — to the cupboard or refrigerator?
The “comfort” is very short-lived.
The only thing that can really fill the void is adherence to His Word and prayer and listening.
It’s a void that, subconsciously, we may be trying to fill — with food.
Or, if we lack humility, the size of our egos might be reflected in physical size. We are not just spiritually but physically “puffed” up. We “feed” our egos.
Is there anger, resentment, fear, anxiety, depression, oppression in your life? These can send you to a damaging snack. We eat to feel the fleeting relief and occupy our senses superficially.
We are what we eat and we eat according to who we are.
We want to be pure and in control. That’s who we really are.
The Man on the Cross, and the Shroud, was a lean, hard-muscled man. Physically fit. It is hard to imagine Him obese. And we are called to follow Him.
Don’t be discouraged. You can do it without going crazy about it. Again, God will lead you as to how. It may end up far easier than you reckoned! No need to “fear the mirror”! No one need be in the realm of the embonpoint. Cast out the “spirit of overindulging.” It is a spirit! Cast out the spirit of insomnia. Lack of sleep — tiredness — drives appetite, causing a vicious circle (for when we snack late, we sleep poorly).
“Lord, infuse me with a way to lose weight. Infuse me, dear Lord. Your servant is waiting and listening” (1 Samuel 3:9)!
Purge what may cause you to eat — the emotion that seems to affect your willpower — and fill the space it leaves behind with the joy of God’s sure guidance. It will come, if you unlock it and give it a fighting chance.
