From The Mailbag: Knowing Things In Advance

February 7, 2017 by sd

Thank you for spiritdaily. The articles are interesting, educational and uplifting, and it has become part of our daily prayer life.
My daughter and I live together and we try, as much as possible to go to daily Mass, say the Angelus at noon and the Chaplet Of Mercy at 3 pm.
We read your recent article about Miracles that often have a logical explanation, but are still amazing.. We experienced such a ‘miracle’ a short while back and would like to share it with you.
We have a statue of the Sacred Heart  and Our Lady of Fatima on the mantle over the fireplace in the living room, and this is where we usually say the Chaplet of Mercy.
A few months ago we went in the living room at 3 PM, and were awed by the halo around the head of the Sacred Heart. No matter where we stood in the room the halo was there. We looked for an explanation and found that a tiny shaft of sunlight came in the window at exactly the right angle to light up the back of Jesus’s head. The halo remained for the entire Chaplet of Mercy, and faded just about the time we finished.
We have not had a recurrence of this phenomena.
I am attaching the photos we took with our phone, including the one that shows the sunlight on the back of the head.
Perhaps it was just a ‘ God wink’, but it was special for us.
Thank you,
Rosalie Elliott

We had a “special report” recently on hunches and premonitions — knowing things in advance (it can be accessed here).

In response came a flurry of e-mails [send us yours]. For example:

“Riding my bike with my son Riley, 12, at the time, I led and he followed,” wrote Connie Peters of Manson, Iowa. “It was an eight or nine-mile ride home.

“We were two or three miles from home and [for some reason] I slowed and called out, ‘Riley get in front of me.’ ‘What?’ he replied. ‘Riley, get in in front of me [I said]. I don’t want you hit by a truck.’

“He went around me and within the next mile I was hit by a truck.”

“In February 1987 l read an article in the Seattle newspaper about the new addition of bleachers to outdoor Husky Stadium,” wrote another viewer, Renee Baranek. “There was nothing unusual about the story, but l got an uneasy feeling of foreboding about it.

“Shortly thereafter, l had a very vivid dream in which l was standing west of the stadium, and with the huge new section filled with spectators, l saw the entire section collapse in front of my eyes. It was horrifying. It was perhaps within a week the new section of seating empty of spectators buckled and collapsed. Thankfully not one person was killed or injured. (Here is the news account).”

“When I came home from college freshman year, I visited my grandparents,” recalls another, named Judy. “As I left, I heard clearly in my head say ‘Goodbye to your grandfather for last time.’

“I went back to school and during midterm exams a few weeks later, he died.  My grandma and parents said I could not come home for the funeral as exams were more important. I did say my last goodbye that night when the voice told me to say it.”

Noted a viewer named Joe from Philadelphia: “I would like to relate an experience I had back in January 2013. I was on retreat with a priest in the Archdiocese of St. Louis and had a vivid dream that I was on a road paved with people who were cheering for Pope Benedict XVI as he rode by in the Popemobile. After he passed, he exited the vehicle and stood off to the side. Then a new Pope dressed in white arrived and the people began cheering for him.

Retired Pope Benedict XVI embraces Pope Francis before the canonization Mass for SS. John XXIII and John Paul II in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. “In the dream, I thought it was odd that there were two popes who were still alive. Then I woke up.

“A few weeks later on February 11, Pope Benedict announced his resignation!”

“In 1965 when I was ten years old I had a premonition,” says Kathy from Nashua, New Hampshire.

“My family had just moved into a new house and my mother was setting up phone service.  When given our new phone number she told me what it was. The last four digits were 1994. She commented, ‘1994, that sounds like an important year.’ I clearly heard a voice in my head say, ‘Yes, that is the year your mother will die.’ For years I never told anyone about this experience because it was so weird. The only person I told was my husband, shortly after we were married in 1980.

“Twenty nine years later, on New Year’s Eve 1994, I was very upset and kept telling my husband that my mother was going to die. Well, the year passed month by month and soon it was early December 1994.

“My husband teased me saying, ‘Your mom is doing great, if she’s going to die this year she only has a few days left.’

“Within a few days of his comment my mother had a major stroke and was gone. Her death was on December 14, 1994. I’ve never known why I was given this knowledge or where it came from.”

[A last one: “I used to work downtown NYC and was a daily communicant at Our Lady of the Rosary Church at the bottom of Manhattan,” wrote Paul Vastola. “There were a group of us that went to Mass daily and several of us who were meeting regularly as Knights of the Immaculata. For a couple of years prior to 9/11, each time I walked past the Trade Center — the Scripture passage, ‘One stone will not remain upon another,’ would always come into my head. I told the group about this and knew something big was going to happen. I also said that when it did we needed to meet at Our Lady of the Rosary.

“About a month before 9/11, I had a dream that I was looking out my office window, which faced Governor’s Island and the Statue of Liberty, and I saw a great whirlpool that was sucking up all the big barges and ships. I then noticed that behind the whirlpool was a massive tidal wave that was coming to hit the downtown area. In my dream, it worked well that we were high up in the building.

“It was certainly damaged but it stayed up and the water didn’t reach us. It seemed those I knew were safe. On the evening of Sept. 10, 1991, I went to a charismatic prayer meeting with one of my fellow Knights of the Immaculata. I had not been to this before and only a couple charismatic services prior. There were about 12-15 people there and many started praying and sharing images they were seeing. I couldn’t make sense of some but several had shared some violent images.

“When my friend dropped me home after, I mentioned the dream I had a month earlier and reiterated that we need to meet at the church if and when anything happens. The next morning when I got out of the subway to go to work I noticed how gorgeous the blue sky was — it was so deep and blue and not a cloud could be seen. As soon as I got to my desk, calls were coming in to see if I was okay and if I knew about some of our friends that worked at the trade center. It was because the first plane hit when I was underground and didn’t see anything during the walk because of buildings blocking my view.

“As I was at my desk talking on the phone I heard the roar of a plane coming, that second plane went right by and then we heard the crash and people in the office screaming as they were watching from the southern part of the building.

“After about an hour we made our way down to the street where there were tens of thousands just looking around.

“That is when I saw some of my fellow Knights and said we need to get to the church.

“We made our way there and just as we got in front, the first tower was coming down. We ran into the church for safety but I honestly thought that this would be our burial. I figured the buildings would come down like dominoes and this was our last moments. I figured that this was our death bunker. After a few minutes we couldn’t see anything outside but realized we did not get crushed.

“We also survived the fall of the second tower. I looked around and saw several people in the church. Then police and firemen and emergency services people were coming in covered in dust or helping others that were hurt. I noticed the priests were busy helping them too. I decided to walk up to the pulpit and lead us in prayer. I spent the next hour and half or so praying the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and other prayers of intention. The pastor actually celebrated the 12:15 Mass as usual and prayed for it and us all. I am not sure what or why I had foresight of this but I believe that period of prayer helped in some way.”]
