Christian author Jonathan Cahn recently shared what he perceived as the extraordinary spiritual battle surrounding his latest book, The Altar of Pergamon, pointing to unseen forces that recall the biblical warnings of his first book The Harbinger and the aftermath of 9/11.
The spiritual opposition reached a dramatic climax at 30,000 feet during a flight on September 3 from Dallas to Newark. After last-minute seat changes placed Cahn next to a stranger, the two engaged in a warm, hours-long conversation. However, the moment Cahn began sharing the Gospel and the reality of God, the dynamic shifted instantly. The passenger turned hostile, unleashing a wave of intense, dark rage that Cahn described as spiritually driven.
Mid-flight, the man [below] reached over and struck Cahn’s laptop. (Pray for this man.) The impact caused a dark mark to spread across the display, blacking out the screen and physically halting Cahn’s work. The man also cursed Cahn and others, spewed racial slurs at a flight attendant, lunged at a person in a seat in front of him, put a choke hold on Cahn, and had to be restrained by other passengers and duct-taped to his seat until law enforcement could board and arrest him.
The sudden escalation ultimately forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Baltimore, sparking national news headlines.
Reflecting on Ephesians 6:12, Cahn, a Messianic Rabbi minister, emphasizes that our struggles are not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and dark powers. Spiritual opposition consistently seeks to preempt God’s plans—attempting to cut off Divine purpose at the very start, just as Herod sought to destroy the Infant Christ or as dark forces attempted to wipe out the Jewish people before the rebirth of Israel.
Some of Cahn’s idea are unfortunately anti-Catholic and so one has to take his views with a measure of salt. But this pattern of intense warfare has repeatedly accompanied Cahn’s writings. Nearly every time he releases a major work exposing the “plans” of the enemy, he faces immediate, unusual attacks, he says. Previous launches were met with a severe building flood, sudden near-paralysis from a mysterious infection, and an emergency appendectomy on release day.
The debut of The Altar of Pergamon proved no exception. Just before embarking on his media tour, that same laptop—used to write the book and store future research—mysteriously developed a large rectangular patch of darkness across its screen. Simultaneously, inexplicable distribution halts occurred across major retailers, holding back thousands of copies for reasons no one could explain.
Viewed through the lens of Scripture, Cahn sees the airborne confrontation and the strange events surrounding The Altar of Pergamon not as random disruptions, but as a visible manifestation of the ongoing spiritual clash between light and darkness—a stark reminder of the supernatural realities facing the world today.
