Hurricane Lala was forecast to bring more strong winds, heavy rain and storm surges to Hawaii overnight and into early Sunday, after the storm’s center narrowly missed land, passing just south of the Big Island.
“Damaging winds will persist across portions of the Big Island of Hawaii overnight, with the strongest winds expected in areas of higher terrain,” the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory published at 11 p.m. local time. Precipitation totals could reach up to 35 inches in some areas, which could produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, forecasters said.
