Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey signed into law a bill Monday allowing abortion at any point in pregnancy. The measure allows abortions up until birth for any reason based on the professional judgment of a physician.
The Massachusetts Senate had fast-tracked the bill to avoid the full committee process so the full body could vote on it before the formal session ended July 31. Previously, state law allowed abortion for the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. After that, abortion was allowed only if a physician believed it is necessary to save the mother’s life or her physical or mental health, or if the baby had a lethal fetal anomaly or would not be able to survive outside the womb.
