From the Demopolis Institute:
76% of Italians trust the Pope more than any other public figure, reflecting his widespread appeal beyond religious realms, according to a survey by the Demopolis Institute presented to Pope Francis. The survey, involving 3,008 Italians, also highlights a perceived crisis in hope, with 75% feeling it is lacking in today’s world, yet many are optimistic about the Jubilee year focusing on societal needs rather than just spiritual messages.
70% of respondents desire increased efforts for peace in 2025, and a majority seeks more action against poverty, hunger, and inequality—issues central to Pope Francis’s tenure. While 45% trust the Church, which is lower than the Pope’s rating, only about 17% regularly attend Mass, reflecting a decline in religious practice despite 72% identifying as Catholic.
Key characteristics of Pope Francis’s leadership, as perceived by the public, include a strong emphasis on peace, care for the marginalized, and a communicative style that resonates widely. Over 40% appreciate his focus on youth and environmental issues.
The survey suggests that the Italian public views Pope Francis’s choices as crucial for the Church’s renewal, facing challenges like modernity and scandals. Looking forward, the majority advocate for a more creative and inclusive approach to faith, involving laypeople and women more, and utilizing new technologies to engage followers.
