Political Curiosities

Call this “campaign curiosities,” or now election ones — of the spiritual kind.

First, on the side of the Divine type:

Striking it was how precisely the states Donald Trump absolutely needed to win the bare minimum necessary electoral count fell into place — from Florida to North Carolina to Pennsylvania. One after another, they fell like marbles in a slot — while Hillary Clinton’s support was all but totally confined to large coastal population centers.

That Trump could win was a bit uncanny, given that Clinton actually beat him in the popular vote by 1.7 million (at last count): three times the number Al Gore beat George Bush by in that election.

A flurry of born-againers claimed to have received “prophetic words” of his victory — so many that USA Today, which rarely pays heed to anything spiritual, let alone mystical, had a large headline about the predictions (“Meet the evangelicals who prophesied a Trump win;” see here.)  One fireman claims he heard a voice years ago informing him that Donald Trump was to be president (see here). We’ll take it all under advisement.

Perhaps most exercised was Jim Bakker (of Jim and Tammy fame). Says a report on Charisma News: “He shared a prophetic word with his fellow hosts on The Jim Bakker Show, including Zach Drew and Sasha Volz of Revelation in the News. ‘I believe there’s going to be the greatest revival we’ve ever seen. And it won’t be like any revival we’ve seen before, but I believe there’s going to be a lot of shaking,’ Bakker tells the group.  Though Americans may believe they’ve found hope in President-elect Donald Trump, Drew says Trump is a 21st-century Churchill, which means a war may be headed America’s way.”

Now, on the other side of the ledger, curiosities of the darker kind:

Out there’s a small company in the Pacific Northwest that has been selling Trump voodoo dolls. As the president-elect might say, “Not nice.” “Since the election ended, the owner of DonaldTrumpVoodoo.com Sally Noedel is saying that her business is through the roof, starting the morning after the votes came in,” notes a report.

Such things are not to be trifled with.

This time of year comes to mind the duende of President John F. Kennedy.

Charisma can be a powerful but dangerous thing.
