If anyone could pinpoint the single most amazing thing about Padre Pio, it would be how many amazing things have been recorded.

Every time one thinks he has reached the end of astonishing accounts, there’s another, followed by another.

The mysterious gifts granted to Saint Padre Pio remain among the most documented supernormal occurrences of the modern era. For half a century, the Capuchin friar stood as a living sign of another realm, attracting millions of pilgrims to the remote Italian town of San Giovanni Rotondo not far from the immensely powerful cave of the Archangel Michael.

It is no coincidence, for early in his life, Saint Padre Pio was shown a vision of an enormous demon he would have to wrestle with his whole life.

The stigmata, as most know, was his most visible physical manifestation. On September 20, 1918, while praying in front of the Crucifix in the back of the church, Padre Pio received the open, bleeding wounds of Christ in his hands, feet, and side. Medical experts sent by both the Vatican and secular organizations examined the wounds over fifty years, finding no signs of cellular decay or infection despite continuous daily blood loss. Oddly, the blood emitted a distinct fragrance of fresh roses and lilies rather than the coppery smell of blood.

Just as mysterious was their sudden disappearance without a single scar shortly before his death in September 1968.

Among the many physical restorations recorded, the case of Gemma Di Giorgi stands out to medical science.

Born in Sicily without pupils in her eyes, the child was completely blind. In 1947, her grandmother brought her to San Giovanni Rotondo, where Padre Pio made the sign of the cross over her. Following First Communion that afternoon, the girl began to see. Subsequent tests by eye specialists confirmed the anomaly: her physical eye structure remained absent of pupils, yet she possessed clear vision.

Reports of bilocation—the ability to be in two places simultaneously—frequently surrounded the friar. During World War II, Allied pilots stationed near Bari reported seeing a brown-robed monk appear directly in the sky, stretching out his hands and forcing their aircraft to turn back before dropping bombs near San Giovanni Rotondo. Military leaders who later investigated these accounts visited the monastery after the war, recognizing Padre Pio as the figure they had encountered in flight.

Decades earlier in 1917, Italian General Luigi Cadorna, preparing to commit suicide following a disastrous military retreat, was stopped by a friar who suddenly appeared in his locked room to dissuade him before vanishing into thin air.

In the confessional, where he spent up to nineteen hours a day, Padre Pio displayed the ability to read souls, known as cardiognosis. Penitents who intentionally withheld sins or forgot specific details were routinely surprised when the friar stated their unconfessed actions, complete with the dates, times, and locations. He often answered mental thoughts and unspoken prayers before a single word was uttered, communicating with international visitors who noted he seemed to understand their native languages without formal training.

Cases of extraordinary physical healing and restoration were documented constantly during his lifetime. Possibly not since Saint Francis of Assisi were so many wonders attribiuted to a saint while he was alive. In 1925, a mother carried her deceased toddler concealed in a suitcase to the friar, who placed his hand on the child’s head and prayed until the boy revived. Years later in 1953, a woman named Paolina Secco fell into a coma and died of terminal cancer on Good Friday; on Easter Sunday, as Padre Pio sang the Gloria during Mass, she reportedly stood up completely healed.

The miracle that led to his formal canonization involved seven-year-old Matteo Pio Colella, who was admitted to the hospital in 2000 with acute meningitis and multi-organ failure. With nine organs shut down, doctors considered the boy clinically dead. Following prayers for Padre Pio’s intercession, the child reported a vision of a bearded monk, after which all organ systems spontaneously restarted without permanent brain or tissue damage.

When his body was exhumed forty years after his passing in 2008, officials found his body in a remarkable state of preservation. Encased in a glass shrine at San Giovanni Rotondo, his remains continue to draw millions seeking a glimpse into the supernatural realities that surrounded his life.
