The Horror Of ‘Wet Markets’

April 9, 2020 by sd

Did the virus come from a “wet market” — dastardly stands where a plethora of wild and domestic animals are gutted or sold live, their blood, excrement, and entrails often mixed together on the floor. Fish. Dogs. Frogs. Donkeys. Snakes. Rats. Even small bears. It is not a pretty picture, but easy to see how a virus from one species could contaminate another, including homo sapiens. Some believe the coronavirus came directly from bats, which are eaten in a soup by some Chinese and that without question harbor various kinds of coronavirus. The wet market often cited in Wuhan did not sell bats, but some do and it did peddle an anteater called the pangolin that may have gotten it from a bat. Or, an accident at a laboratory only kilometers away — or employees from the lab — may have unknowingly carried it to the market, where it was amplified. Wet markets have been implicated in previous outbreaks, including SARS and swine flu. Whatever the case, when it comes to unsanitary conditions, as well as how we treat God’s creatures, photographs tell the story [caution, disturbing and graphic] .
