THE MAILBAG: A NUMBER OF ISSUES, STARTING AGAIN WITH TRYING TO RECKON STRANGE 'RUMBLES'
Let's cover a number of items today, starting with the prophetic.
When we think of truly major events that loom in the relatively near future (and loom they do, during the next decade or two, with a build-up that can already be noted), it's often with a sense of anticipation and excitement -- and a challenge it will be. Our world is going to change. One day -- again, relatively soon -- our earth will be purified. It will be both glorious and painful (and dramatic). Everyone wants the Lord to wash the evil away. How much there is!
But when thinking about those potential coming events, it should be first through sincere prayer to avert or at least mitigate the severity.
Too often, we don't stop to contemplate what it would be like to encounter (and live after) massive events (due to war or nature).
Are we really desirous of what can (and, if current trends continue, will) be wrought? Shouldn't we be praying much more to lessen them? Meditate on how a truly global effect (the earth giving a little wobble) might affect you and your family. No longer would you be watching everything from afar -- something affecting others on TV.
This realization should give energy to prayer. Lord, avert chastisement! With prayer comes hope and with hope comes victory.
Unusual stuff is occurring around us. Societal events. Bizarre celebrities. Brushes with small asteroids. Storms. Swerving weather. Strange lights in the sky. Strange rumblings. Harsh civil discourse. Family divisions. Politics, politics. Watch the lightning (listen to the thunder) this summer.
Sue Melefsky writes to say, "I always am
called by God through weather, tornadoes and storms and earthquakes to
pray for those in need. I awoke two weeks before the hurricanes hit our
Maryland area and knew we were not going to start school. No one believed
me until it happened and many thought it was the earthquake that happened
last August. It was the storms I saw not the earthquake. All happened just
as I had seen from the Lord....many now pray when I ask them to do this
for other's sake...for safety.
"I have seen again in a vision of swirling storms up our coast and the
West Coast almost at the same time. Churning and moving, almost
simultaneously. I looked on the hurricane sight tonight after my Rosary
and saw a hurricane developing on the East Coast and another one that is
going to hit Mexico hard on the west coast. Please ask people to pray for
people to prepare and for God to have mercy in the matter of this weather.
"
Back in the 19th century, a mystical Indian chief named Seattle gave a speech in which he asked, "What will happen when the buffalo are all slaughtered? What will happen when the secret corners of the forest are heavy with the scent of many men and the view of the ripe hills is blotted by talking wires?” His answer: “The end of living and the beginning of survival.”
When we think of signs of the times, and "strange rumblings" (an issue of late), we can be excused for citing Scripture, for there you will find the selfsame. As a viewer points out, "I find it particularly interesting that loud rumblings are mentioned several times in John's revelations -- differentiated from peals of thunder so that there is no confusion." To wit:
Revelation 4:5: From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God.
Revelation 8:5: Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.
Revelation 11:19: Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.
Revelation 16:18: Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake.
Adds a blog posted by Paul Anthony Melanson, "I was pondering the strange rumblings which are being heard around the world and in particular the United States. In prayer this word comes to me: 'Go, My people, enter your chambers, and close the doors behind you.'"
We constantly get "prophetic words" from folks about California, which we'll discuss this weekend at a retreat. How many are imitations of previous ones? Might any be a real indication?
Few know that there have been outbreaks of strange rumblings in the past in countries such as Germany (which was famous, back during the Middle Ages, when the rumblings occurred, for witchery). Might such sounds indicate the presence of evil -- be more spiritual than seismic in nature? Wrote Paul Cleghorn of Mason, New Hampshire, "Did you know that Clintonville, Wisconsin [location of a recent outbreak of rumblings, perhaps seismic] has been known for its witchcraft and occult practices? David J. Meyer, who later became a Christian pastor, was born in Clintonville into a family steeped in witchcraft and occultism. His biography mentions this here. Katherine King and her husband moved to Clintonville and were immediately besieged [they claim] by poltergeist phenomena [here]." In Connecticut, strange rumblings are frequently heard in the small town of Moodus, which the Algonquins had called "Machimoodus," or "the place of noises."
But now, it seems like it occurs in many places. It's all a puzzle. Phenomena are occurring around the world. In India, a Crucifix is exuding. In a former Soviet republic, an icon of Mary bleeds. Folks are having dreams and seeing visions. "On September 7, 2007, just two days after my 27th birthday, I had a rich spiritual experience: a beautiful lady smiling on me with brilliant mysterious rays glowing her face, which lasted for about three to five seconds," wrote Felipe F. Montealto, Jr. "This happened in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia. I believed that I received special graces, which I would describe in the words of Saint Catherine of Siena: 'Oh! If you only saw what I saw, you would never have disturbed me in such a sweet vision.'"
And then -- most importantly -- there are the "signs" in our own lives.
Wrote Mary MacDonald of Bayview, Idaho: "As I read your story 'What are you bound to?' I was reminded of a true story that happened to my husband a number of years ago. We own and operate a marina in Northern Idaho. One day one of our customers, I’ll call him 'Joe,' came in and told my husband that he was going to take the Honda 9.9 horse power outboard engine off the back of his sailboat. My husband offered his assistance but Joe said he was going to turn the boat 'backwards' in the slip so he could easily lift the outboard engine off the back of the boat and directly onto the dock. He appreciated the offer but was sure he could do it himself.
"A little while later my husband heard someone yelling for help. He stepped outside his office onto our dock and couldn’t see anything; then he heard the yelling again but more frantic than before. He then realized that it was coming from the area where the sailboat was turned backwards and raced to see what was wrong. He got to the boat only to find Joe laying flat on his stomach on the dock; his left hand scratching at the dock trying to find a hold and his right arm stretched taut downward into the water.
"Joe had been afraid that he would drop his outboard engine so he had tied a rope from his wrist to the engine. As he was hoisting the heavy outboard engine off the back of his boat he lost his balance and dropped the 100 pound engine; now securely tied to his wrist into the water, which by the way was 50 feet deep. The weight of the engine slammed him to the dock where he was able to keep his body sprawled, clinging onto the wooden decking and yell for help. His right arm was stretched tight into the water with the outboard engine securely dangling four feet below. As well as being a very upsetting incident, this story has always seemed 'parable-like' when one contemplates what things in our life do we 'tie' or 'bind' to ourselves -- even to our own detriment.
"My husband -- filled with adrenalin -- was able to grab the rope and yank the outboard out of the water and onto the dock. He still marvels at how he was able to do that. The man was obviously shaken but wondered out loud ‘what would have happened if I had slipped into the water?'”
What has our society bound itself to?
Has lust replaced love?
And our "music"?
There is Lady Gaga, trying to outdo Madonna with a song about her love for Judas. (Muslims got her thrown out of Indonesia.) Meanwhile, a "family-oriented" hamburger chain has Hugh Hefner as its spokesman. This is part of what Sister Lucia dos Santos of Fatima called the "diabolic disorientation."
Says Leanne Swarts of Archer, Florida: "I always thought that 666 (for the antichrist) means:
six - six - six
sechs - sechs - sechs (the number six in German, pronounced "zex")
sex - sex - sex.
What, she asks, could be more anti-Christ, and more inviting of correction, than our current focus -- obsession -- with purely corporeal pleasure?"
What indeed?
