Water systems at more than 30 communities were targeted earlier this week in what officials called a “coordinated cyberattack.”
Days after 36 Minnesota water systems were hit by cyberattacks, U.S. cybersecurity leaders now say they are tracking a “significant increase” in attacks on water systems nationwide and – according to The New York Times – U.S. investigators are looking at Iranian-affiliated hacking groups as the most likely culprit. For months, U.S. intelligence has been warning that Iranian-affiliated hackers are likely to attack our critical infrastructure, and just days before the attacks on Minnesota water systems, the FBI, EPA and other federal agencies issued a joint alert that Iranian-affiliated threat actors are targeting internet-connected technology, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs) that are tied to water systems.
